The Horizon Project Foundation chose the director of the Charleston Civic Design Center as its CEO, the foundation announced Tuesday.
Michael Maher has served as the center’s director since 2001, and he has been involved in the Horizon Project since its start.
“The Horizon Project is at a crucial point in its history,” said Bill Baker, chairman of the Horizon Project Foundation’s board, in a news release. “Strong leadership and continuity is very important to accelerate our momentum. The board is very pleased to have Michael Maher as its first CEO. He has exemplary professional credentials, a strong track record on Horizon with a significant breadth and depth of knowledge about the project.”
The Horizon Project will redevelop 20 acres in downtown Charleston along the Ashley River and adjacent to the Medical University of South Carolina. The project is being run by the Horizon Project Foundation, which supports the city of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina Foundation. The Horizon foundation has performed predevelopment work and will provide that work to the master developer, Gateway Development Services. The foundation selected Gateway in May.
