South Carolina Auto Insurance Facts

South Carolina ranks 27th in the nation for average auto insurance expenses. (1)

The average South Carolinian spends $698.30 a year on auto insurance. (1)

South Carolina has the fifth highest motor vehicle death rate in the nation. (2)

South Carolina drivers had about 102,000 traffic accidents in 1997, with an economic loss of nearly $2 billion. (2)

About 61 percent of South Carolinians wear a seatbelt.  This is 7 percent below the national average of 68 percent. (3)

One drunk driving conviction in South Carolina could mean more than $5,000 per year in extra insurance costs. (4)

The insurance industry pays out $1.14 for every $1.00 of auto liability insurance dollars it collects. (5)
