The South Carolina Aging in Place Coalition has installed the following officers and board members: Chairman Paul Franklin; Vice Chairman and Chairman Elect Janet Schumacher; Treasurer Harry Fendrich; David Heilman and Cheryl Ericson to the membership committee; Barbara Franklin and Maureen Maguire to the education committee; and Dick Giffen and Margaret Agee to the transportation committee. Additionally, the coalition has established an Outreach Initiative for 2008 to be chaired by John Jenkins.
Joe Baker, president of Alcus Financial Group LLC, has been recognized by Plan Sponsor magazine in the December 2007 issue as one of the nations best retirement plan advisers. The designation makes Baker eligible for the prestigious 2007 Retirement Plan Adviser of the Year award which will be awarded in April.
Six Lowcountry chefs were invited to prepare a six-course dinner for 80 guests at the James Beard House in New York City. Featured chefs included: Aaron Deal of Tristan; Fred Neuvelle of The Fat Hen; Mark Collins of Circa 1886; Frank McMahon of Hanks Seafood Restaurant; Kelly Wilson of Cypress; and Shawn Brock of McCradys. Together, the chefs prepared dishes saluting the Lowcountrys cooking style.
The Mount Pleasant Business and Professional Association started the year with a new president and executive board. Chuck Diggle was elected president, Christopher Cisneros was elected vice president, Diane Pauldine was re-elected secretary and Shawna Garris was elected treasurer. Margaret Cotton, the associations president for the last three years, will step into the position of immediate past president and will continue to work with the board.
Melissa Marro, founder and president of First Impressions Home Staging & Interior ReDesign LLC, was nominated as 2007 Staging Innovator of the Year and 2007 Professional Stager of the Year by the Real Estate Staging Association. Bevin Harmon Googer, vice president of First Impressions, was also nominated as the 2007 Rookie Stager of the Year. All nominations were peer-based.
Adam Rohaly has passed the Architectural Registration Exam and is now a registered architect in the state of South Carolina. Rohaly has been with Stubbs Muldrow Herin architects for more than four years.
Parker-Sims Interiors was showcased as leading furniture post on nationally renown interior design blog Design*Sponge. The blog recognized the company for their chic Driftwood Bliss Bed. Design*Sponge is a blog dedicated to emerging trends and products with more than 25,000 daily readers.
Buddy McAlister, senior principal systems engineer within the Institute for Solutions Generation, has become a certified scrum master. The Scrum Alliance is a nonprofit organization committed to the iterative improvement of the software development profession.
Tony Pope, an agent with State Farm Insurance, was appointed as chairman of the board for the Greater Summerville Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce for 2008. Pope has served on the chamber board for the past several years as the membership chair and as a member of the finance committee. He has been a member of the Summerville Greater Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce for more than 15 years. Additionally, Pope serves on the board of directors for Charleston Regional Development Alliance, Children in Crisis, Meals on Wheels and Carolina Autism.
The Zonta Club of Charleston has announced a new interim board. Maureen Cody was named the new interim president; Debra Turner will remain the treasurer, La-Tanya Fisher was elected secretary; and Diana Bogart and Patricia Warner will remain on the board of directors. Charlestons club member Lollie Harper has been named as one of the board directors for Zonta International Foundation.
The American Board of Trial Advocates has elevated Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough Partner G. Mark Phillips to the rank of Advocate, a level achieved only after an attorney has experience in the equivalent of 50 jury trials. Founded in 1958, ABOTA is a national association of experienced trial lawyers and judges. Phillips practices liability litigations.
GEL Engineering LLC Project Manager Tim Ferguson has received his South Carolina Professional Engineers license. Ferguson specializes in project management, design and construction administration services involving storm-water management, construction management, wetland restoration, land development and municipal engineering.
Goose Creek City Council appointed David Warner to the citys economic development advisory committee. Warner is the division vice president for training and simulation business development at AAI. The committee was formed in 1994 by Goose Creek City Council.

Charleston County Government and the Trident Workforce Investment Board presented the local inmate welding program as a national model at the White House Faith-Based and Community Initiatives National Summit on Prisoner Re-Entry, held in Los Angeles. The Charleston County Detention Center Welding Initiative has successfully trained 63 inmates who are now working and contributing to their community.
The Silver Puffin, a King Street retail store, was invited as a guest of the Canadian government during the 8th annual Prince Edward Island Craft and Buyers Market being held in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The Silver Puffin is one of only three buyers from the United States who have received special invitations from the government of Prince Edward Island.
Dr. Richard Gordon has been appointed as South Carolinas liaison to the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Gordon, founder of Palmetto Physical Medicine, was selected based on his experience, involvement and passion for advocacy.

Alicia Gregory of Charleston has graduated from the Dealer Candidate Academy of the National Automobile Dealers Association. Gregory has received training designed to prepare her as a car dealer manager for her family owned dealership.
Cameron Cox, 13, of Hanahan has won the Joye Law Firm 4th annual Shoot Three and Win Challenge grand prize of $1,000 after making four consecutive free-throw shots.
Sheryl McAlister of WebsterRogers Charleston office has become a Certified Financial Planner under the authorization of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. Individuals who have met experience and ethical requirements by the board are eligible for the certification. Those certified agree to meet ongoing education requirements and uphold the boards code of ethics.
