Leukemia Ball nets $105,000 in donations
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Societys second annual Leukemia Ball netted $105,000 to fund the societys research and patient services goals, including a $2,000 donation from the employees of North Charlestons Scientific Research Corp. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of Partners In Progress awards to Barbara Halpern, a long-time supporter of the society and its Team in Training program, and Dr. Daniel Fernandes, a society researcher and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Medical University of South Carolinas Hollings Cancer Center. Friends of Earth Fare receive more than $3,000
Over the first quarter of 2007, Earth Fare has donated $3,089 in its Friends of Earth Fare program. The program allows customers to donate change from their purchases, and the store donates 10 cents whenever a customer uses a reusable bag for his or her groceries. Januarys Friend of Earth Fare was La Leche League, Februarys friend was Parents and Children Together and Marchs friend was Charleston Kids with Cameras.
MUSC student gala supports charities
The Medical University of South Carolinas College of Medicine Student Council Charity Ball raised a record-breaking $40,000, which MUSC students presented to six local charities: Crisis Ministries, the CARES Clinic, the S.C. Association for the Blind, the ASCEND Foundation, First Baptist Church of North Charleston Medical Clinic and the Trident Area Agency on Aging.
Happy Days and Special Times lands $12,900 in grants
Happy Days and Special Times, a local nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of life of Lowcountry children with cancer and their parents, has received almost $13,000 in grants since the first of the year. The organization has received a $3,000 grant from the Coastal Community Foundation; a $5,000 grant from the Bakker Family Fund; a $1,400 grant from Charleston County Medical Society Auxiliary; and a $3,500 grant from International Paper Co. Foundation.
