Marie Bost, co-owner, agent and broker-in-charge with Edisto Real Estate Co., was the fifth-ranked real estate agent in closed transaction in the Charleston Trident Multiple Listing Service for 2006. Edisto Real Estate Co. was the top-ranking company on Edisto in closed transactions in 2006.

The Cassique Clubhouse, located in the Kiawah Island Golf Club community, won a gold award from the National Active Retirement Association for best clubhouse/community center. The NARA is a national networking and educational organization dedicated to those who build for and serve the retiree market. The NARA judges chose the Cassique Clubhouse because of its design and functionality and how it sets the tone for lifestyle for the Kiawah Island Golf Club.

The College of Charleston and The Citadel are working together to increase the number of computer scientists in South Carolina. The Department of Computer Science at the College of Charleston and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at The Citadel recently formed a joint industry advisory board of computer science. The advisory board will concentrate on matters of strategic direction and philosophy of the computing programs offered by each institution.

Palmetto Carriage Works was selected by Wells Fargo Bank to provide professional stagecoach driving services. Tommy Doyle, manager of the project for Palmetto Carriage, will be added as Wells Fargo’s youngest stagecoach driver in the history of its program. Wells Fargo operates several units throughout the country, using its trademark of a stagecoach, four-horse hitch and driver in authentic costume to promote its financial services.

BB&T Charleston Food + Wine Festival awarded its Culinary Legend Awards to: John Taylor, in the Individual category; Gayle Rawlins, in the College Student category; Emily Byrd, in the High School Student category; and American Culinary Federation-Charleston Chapter, in the Organization category.

Beachside Real Estate, formerly a Charleston independent real estate company, has become a franchised brokerage firm of the Century 21 system, and is now known as Century 21 Beachside Real Estate. It is located on Isle of Palms and at the Towne Centre in Mount Pleasant.

Samara L.A. Simmons, a student at Academic Magnet High School in Charleston, won the state final of the National Endowment of the Arts’ Poetry Out Loud competition and will represent South Carolina in the national finals in Washington, D.C. Caitlin Tuten-Rhodes of Ashley Hall in Charleston was named second runner-up. Simmons received a $200 prize, a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books for her school library and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national finals, where $50,000 in scholarships and prizes will be awarded. Shaw received $100, and her library received a $200 poetry book stipend.

Staci Meads of Alpharetta, Ga., won the inaugural Family Circle Cup Official Drink Contest with “Indigo Breeze.” The drink earned her $100 in cash as well as tickets to the semifinals and finals of the 2007 Family Circle Cup.

Neal Prince + Partners Architects won the AIA S.C. Robert Mills Honor Award for Heiwa, an urban penthouse in downtown Greenville. The Robert Mills Award recognizes design that reflects the special architecture of the South.

Global Energy Systems launched a consumer-direct Web site to meet the demand for individuals to learn about new technological products in the marketplace.

The South Carolina Federation of Museums presented its 2007 Award of Achievement to Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site in recognition of the park’s new visitors center and museum. The museum and visitors center opened in August 2006 as the centerpiece of ongoing efforts to reshape the site and interpret its history more effectively.

The Charleston branch of S&ME Inc. won the 2007 Palmetto Award, the top award given by the American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina. The award is for S&ME’s geotechnical engineering work on Vought/Global Aeronautica’s 700,000-square-foot facilities in North Charleston. The plant is used to build fuselage sections of Boeing Co.’s new 787 Dreamliner passenger jet. The project was also named a national ACEC finalist.

The Medical University of South Carolina’s Hollings Cancer Center and Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. recognized Zora Brown for her contributions to the fight against cancer. The mayor proclaimed March 21 as Zora Brown Day at a reception in her honor. 

Coldwell Banker Commercial Atlantic International Inc. was named Coldwell Banker Commercial’s top South Carolina off in closed adjusted gross commission income for 2006.

Doug English, a certified financial planner for Charleston-based Scientific Investors, was recently named to Linsco/Private Ledger’s Chairman’s Club, a status reserved for the top 6% of all advisors, based on the production ranking of all registered representatives at LPL at the end of 2006.

Bart Hamilton has been named southeast regional sales manager of Briggs Industries Inc.

Andra L. Watkins, principal of business advisory services firm Positus Consulting LLC, was the featured speaker for Growth Venture, an entrepreneurial training program hosted by the College of Charleston. Her talk focused on mistakes existing businesses must avoid in achieving overall business growth and profitability, and setting smart financial benchmarks for continued growth.

The Healthcare Services division of Sanford Rose Associates has relocated its office from Atlanta to Charleston. SRA is a global network of independently owned offices in the executive search field. SRA is located on East Bay Street.

Vivian A. Wong, co-founder and chairwoman of the Pacific Gateway Capital LLC, has been named the 2007 Woman of the Year by Charleston Women in International Trade.

Plantin Thyme Garden Center in Mount Pleasant on Bowman Road has changed its name. The center, which was purchased in 2006 by Richard Ellis, is now The Secret Garden Center and Gift Shop.

Joseph P. Daly, president of Daly Associates LLC, has been accredited by the Institute for Independent Business. Daly’s recent accreditation will expand his access to the institute’s network of associates in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties.

Brandon Peek of Ridgeville was selected as South Carolina’s representative in Champions Across America, a national Children’s Miracle Network program presented by CO-OP Financial Services. As South Carolina’s ambassador, Peek and his family represented the state and Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital by visiting Capitol Hill and the White House in March.

Skamper Industries LLC received the American Pet Association’s Seal of Approval for the Skamper-Ramp patented water-escape ramp.

Amy Lutz, news anchor at Live 5 News in Charleston, hosted the 2007 Women of Distinction event to benefit Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina. The event honored women for their personal and professional accomplishments, their community involvement, and their stature as a role model for young girls.

Planning the Globe received a 2007 Events in Excellence Award, or EVIE, from the International Special Events Society for its production of “Mission Possible,” a welcome event for more than 700 guests of a major U.S. financial institution as part of a weekend incentive program held at the Greenbrier Hotel and Resort, West Virginia.

Citadel Broadcasting radio station WTMA 1250-AM was named the Associated Press “Station Of The Year” and received several other awards during a presentation ceremony. WTMA’s Fred Storey received more awards than any other radio news broadcaster in the state, including Best Newscast, Best General Reporting, Best Feature Report and Best Spot News. Megan Keys, anchor/reporter with WTMA, also received awards in multiple categories, including first place for Feature Reporting and second place for General Reporting and Best Spot News. Richard Todd, WTMA Morning Buzz host, received first place honors in the “Best Sportscast” category.

Charleston Habitat for Humanity accepted help from Mickey Baker to the construction site located on 28 H St. Baker is 95 years old and helped First Scots Presbyterian Church paint the interior walls of the home on 28 H St.

With more than 20 years of brokerage experience, Fraser co-founded Grubb & Ellis|Barkley Fraser in 1989. He specializes in office leasing and development, and has sold/leased more than 100,000 square feet of office space, and developed office, hospitality and sports facilities valued at more than $100 million since the company’s founding. 

DiversityBusiness.com named Mount Pleasant company Varner Miller Associates as one of the Top 100 Woman Owned businesses in the state of South Carolina (Div100). The Div100 is the seventh annual listing of the South Carolina’s top 100 Woman Owned businesses. 

South Carolina Aquarium accepted accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. To receive the honor, the South Carolina Aquarium participated in a very lengthy evaluation process, which required the completion of a detailed questionnaire including copies of Aquarium policies, procedures, records, lists and reports. After the Accreditation Commission studied the application, a team of inspectors visited the Aquarium in person. Each AZA Accreditation team consists of at least one veterinarian along with animal and operations experts. The inspectors spent several long days at the Aquarium, visiting every area, interviewing staff, checking records and examining the physical facilities. The South Carolina Aquarium first received AZA accreditation in 2001 and is required to participate in the entire evaluation process again in five years.

College of Charleston President P. George Benson has been appointed to the board directors of The Foundation for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The foundation is a nonprofit, private-sector organization that raises funds to endow the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, rewarding quality in the business, health care, education and nonprofit sectors.

Nancy Sumersett of Summerville has been selected as “Outstanding Manager” with Greenery Gallery Inc. Interior Tropical Plant Care. Sumersett began as a part-time technician in the 1990s and moved into management utilizing her leadership and management skills.

DeAnna Moss, a tax manager in the downtown office of Dixon Hughes, was named treasurer of the Center for Women’s Board of Directors. The board of directors supports the Center for Women staff in its mission to make personal and professional success an everyday event for women in the Lowcountry.

Carolina Coastal Properties real estate agent Charles Hamrick was the featured agent on the season two premiere of HGTV’s “National Open House,” on April 2. The episode was the first of four shows that featured Hamrick and highlights real estate in the Charleston area.

Ronald R Watkins will take on a more active role in Claims Southeast, LLC, a multi-line claims adjusting firm. Watkins is the former manager of James C. Greene Co.

Charleston County Solid Waste & Recycling received two Bronze Addy Awards for its 2006 educational TV ad campaigns from the Advertising Federation of Charleston. The awards were presented to Charleston County Solid Waste & Recycling at the local 2007 Addy Awards Gala held at the Charleston Place hotel. Charleston County Solid Waste & Recycling and its production company, Osprey Productions HD, received one award for a 30-second, anti-litter commercial about illegal dumping titled “Do the Right Thing and Put it Where it Belongs.” The other Bronze Award was given for the “Get in the Game and Put it Where it Belongs” recycling campaign, which included three TV commercials featuring the Charleston Stingrays, RiverDogs and Battery local sports teams.

HouseRaising Inc., a managed service provider to the custom homebuilding industry, formed a partnership with Robert A. Lawrence Jr. of Summerville to build and renovate custom homes in the Charleston-Bluffton area. Lawrence, a third generation master craftsman, has more than 10 years experience in home construction.

Richardson, Patrick, Westbrook and Brickman attorney Charles W. Patrick Jr. was selected to receive the Gold Compleat Lawyer Award given by the University of South Carolina School of Law Alumni Association. This award is given annually to alumni who have extraordinarily high standards of professional competence, ethics, and integrity, and who have demonstrated superior performance in his or her professional career.

The Connection had its first national broadcast, airing in 14 million homes. The Connection, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, works through a spirit of affirmation and acceptance, promoting understanding, celebrating diversity, and presenting the human side of social issues in South Carolina through a weekly television show.
