Ashley River Center team: ‘Marina’ a misnomer

A description of a 10-slip dock as a “marina” in a public notice regarding development of the Ashley River Center in North Charleston is a misnomer, said staffers with Magnolia Development LLC, which is managing the development.

The Ashley River Center is one of two large parcels of land on the neck of the peninsula linking the cities of Charleston and North Charleston that are under development as a mixed-used community.

Cherokee Partners of Raleigh, N.C., owns the land slated for development and had purchased it through Ashley II of Charleston.

Ashley II of Charleston LLC, the owners and developers of the 87-acre Ashley River Center site on the Ashley River, applied on Aug. 17 for approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers of two dock facilities.

One is described in the public notice published by the Corps as a “private community marina,” causing the development team to blanch

Winthrop Allen, Magnolia Development’s director of development, said his group is applying for a permit for a community dock, based on the federal Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management’s definition of a dock.

That definition states that a community dock is a structure with 10 or fewer boat slips.
