Santee Cooper has selected four Berkeley County 2007 high school graduates for its Power Associates technical-career scholarship program: Todd Lane, Brenda Lee, Altonio Mustapher and Jared Sherrow. A newly piloted initiative, Santee Cooper’s Power Associates program is designed to prepare students for technical careers in electric utility operations.

 

SCS Engineers has joined the U.S. Green Building Council in an effort to assist with and promote sustainable design and engineering.

 

Charleston Coffee Roasters moved to a new roasting facility on Huger Street downtown. Established in 2006, Charleston Coffee Roasters is a private roaster serving more than 80 restaurants, locally owned coffee shops and grocery stores throughout the Lowcountry.

 

Stephen A. Russell was elected 2007-2008 chairman of the South Carolina Board of Architectural Examiners, the state’s regulatory board for the practice of architecture. Russell is the owner and president of Stephen Russell & Associates Ltd. located in Mount Pleasant.

 

Camp Low Country, operated by Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina, was elected the best summer residential camp in the Lowcountry by readers of Lowcountry Parent magazine.

 

The Charitable Society of Charleston announced their new board members for 2007-2008: Dana McMurry, president; Glen Gardner, vice president; Sara Nash, treasurer; Allison Carter, secretary; Paul Carroll and Mandi Martin, Reindeer Run; Ray Thomas and Terry Tobin, events; Jeff Odom, volunteer projects; Amie Grimes, membership; Theresa Peters and Rebecca Williams, public relations; and Jamey Arthur and Matt Watson, corporate sponsorship.

 

Coast Architects Inc. has been certified as a women-owned business by the Governor’s Office of Small and Minority Business Assistance. The goals of OSMBA include promoting the growth and development of small- and minority-owned businesses in South Carolina and advocating equitable portions of state-procurement contracts be awarded to these businesses.

 

The Charleston Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals named Glennda Ross as Member of the Year 2006-2007. She is the executive assistant to the chairman in Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. 

 

Callie White was named one of Modern Bride’s 25 Trendsetters of 2007 for her home-style, buttermilk biscuits. Callie’s Charleston Biscuits debuted in Saveur and Coastal Living magazines.

 

Paul Heinauer, president of Glasspro Inc. and a certified PPG Prostars instructor, began teaching two new Continuing Education courses to local insurance agents. The new courses, “Airbag & Restraint Systems” and “Hybrid & Alternative Power Vehicles,” are the latest in a series of comprehensive training programs designed to provide insurance agents with decision-making tools used in the auto glass repair industry.

 

Summerville Medical Center employees Janice Harp, Judy Riesen and Maria Vasselman achieved certification in Case Management, a national credential for registered nurses and social workers recognized by the Case Management Society.

 

Joel Willis, risk management consultant for Commonwealth Insurance Group in Charleston, earned the Certified WorkComp Advisor designation, conferred by the Institute of WorkComp Professionals. The Asheville, N.C.-based organization trains insurance professionals to locate costly errors in workers’ compensation coverage.

 

Mary  Shahid, an attorney with the McNair Law Firm in Charleston, was among four South Carolina business leaders to be elected to a three-year term as a member of the board of directors of the South Carolina Council on Economic Education. SCCEE is a nonprofit business-education partnership dedicated to providing teachers with continuing education and resources to enhance economics and personal finance education among K-12 students in South Carolina’s public, private and home schools.
