Stephen D. Kirkland, a tax and compensation consultant with Kirkland Thomas Watson & Dyches LLC, earned the Certified Management Consultant designation.

 

Jim Collins, a longtime volunteer at Trident United Way’s 211 Hotline, won the S.C. Governor’s Legacy Volunteer Award for outstanding community service. The Legacy Award goes to a volunteer with at least 15 years of continual voluntary service with one or more agencies in a community. Collins has served with 211 Hotline and with the crisis hotline since 1991. He is also an active volunteer with Lowcountry AIDS Services.

 

Jessica E. Munday, president and owner of Trio Solutions Inc., was named public relations chair for Susan G. Komen for the Cure Lowcountry Affiliate. Munday has been actively involved with the Lowcountry Affiliate since 2002.

The premier edition of Smart Family will hit mailboxes and distribution racks in Charleston. The publication blends current research on issues important to families along with local resources. The biannual publication is edited by Kathleen Ricciardi, a Daniel Island resident.

 

South Carolina Realtor Mike Terry earned the Graduate Realtor Institute designation by attending a minimum of 90 hours of classroom instruction, covering a variety of subjects, including contract law, professional standards, sales and marketing, finance and risk reduction.

 

Mark Rutledge, president and CEO of Rehabilitation Centers of Charleston, received the Butch Buchanan Clinical Excellence Award for a Physical Therapist by the South Carolina chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association. Rutledge also was recognized by the Charleston Metro Sports Council as the male amateur athlete of the year for his national championship in the 50-meter breast stroke.

 

Trident Health System announced the recipients of the 2007 Frist Humanitarian Award presented to Hospital Corporation of America employees and volunteers. Trident Medical Center 2007 recipients include the Rev. Al Finley, a hospital volunteer, Trident Medical Center; Karen Grooms, sterile processing department manager, Trident Medical Center; Eileen R. Beckett, a hospital volunteer, Summerville Medical Center; and Garry F. Turner, a surgical technician, Summerville Medical Center. The Frist Humanitarian Award is presented annually in recognition of the humanitarian efforts and achievements of the late Dr. Thomas F. Frist Sr., a founder of HCA.

 

Chris Drury, president of Kiawah Island Real Estate, and sales agents Thomas Liepman and Kathie Wood joined other specialists in the luxury real estate market from North and South America for the Christie’s Great Estates Regional Conference in Orlando, Fla. Kiawah Island Real Estate is an exclusive affiliate of Christie’s Great Estates, a network of real estate brokers dedicated to the marketing and sale of distinctive properties around the globe.

 

Real estate and vacation properties firm Dunes Properties of Charleston opened its first real estate studio in the King Street shopping district. It is the company’s sixth office.

 

William C. Hubbard, a partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough’s Columbia office, has been selected to receive the American Inns of Court’s 2007 Professionalism Award for the Fourth Circuit. He is the first South Carolinian to receive the award since its inception in the Fourth Circuit in 1998.

 

Georgina Ngozi, executive director for the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, was appointed to the Association of Children’s Museums board of directors. She will serve on the Diversity, Education and Development committees.

 

LifeManagement Center Inc. opened its third center to serve Walterboro and the surrounding areas. LifeManagement Center is a nonprofit organization that helps children and adults with attention and learning difficulties develop positive strategies for success. LifeManagement Center will continue to serve adult clients at the West Ashley and Summerville offices.

 

Kim Macalister has been accredited by the Institute for Independent Business. Macalister’s accreditation will expand access to the institute’s network of associates in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties. The Institute for Independent Business is a global nonprofit, research, training and accreditation organization established in 1984. Accredited associates are dedicated to delivering practical advice and support to entrepreneurs and business owners.

 

Richardson Patrick Westbrook & Brickman attorney Beth Middleton Burke was elected vice president of the College of Charleston alumni board. She previously served on the board from 2004 to 2006 and is a 1994 graduate from the College of Charleston.

 

Elizabeth Prout, was voted Financial Executive of the Year by the Institute of Management Accountants. Prout was selected by her peers after completing an intensive application and peer review process. Prout was instrumental in the successful reorganization and ensuing sale of Universal Solutions, a telecommunications company with branches in 10 southeastern states to Black Box LLC. Prout has advised on initiatives with the Charleston Digital Corridor, is a member of the Charleston Symphony League, Downtown Rotary Club, a hospice volunteer and mentor for The Citadel Business School Mentors Association.

Charleston law firm Derfner Altman & Wilborn received the Pro Bono Publico Award by the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service. The award will be presented at the Pro Bono Publico Awards Assembly luncheon at the Moscone West Convention Center on Aug. 13 during the ABA annual meeting in San Francisco. Two of the firm’s individual attorneys, Peter Wilborn and Jonathan Altman, were recipients of the S.C. Bar’s Pro Bono Award.

 

Beau C. Hollingsworth with Century 21 Beachside Real Estate was awarded the Accredited Buyer Representation designation by the Real Estate Buyer’s Agent Council Inc. of the National Association of Realtors. Hollingsworth joins more than 32,000 real estate professionals in North America with the designation.

 

Love Inc., a local nonprofit organization, was granted 501(c)(3) status and is now classified as a public charity. Love Inc. was founded in May 2005 by Laureen Deibert and volunteers for those in need by providing free care and attention to senior citizens throughout the Lowcountry.

 

At the 2007 annual conference of the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education, the board of commissioners granted specialized accreditation of the business degree programs for Charleston Southern University. The accreditation by the IACBE assures high quality of Charleston Southern University’s business programs. Accredited programs have been examined by trained evaluators who ensure that the IACBE’s standards are being met in eight key areas: outcomes assessment, strategic planning, curriculum, faculty, scholarly and professional activities, resources, internal/external relationships, and educational innovation.

 

ENVIROSmart was awarded the Small Business Achievement Award at the third annual Department of Homeland Security Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C. The award, presented to company owner Michelle Lynch, was in honor of ENVIROSmart’s outstanding performance for hazardous waste management service, provided to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers in Glynco, Ga., Cheltenham, Md., Artesia, N.M., and Charleston.

 

Charleston interior designer Muffie Faith of Elizabeth Stuart Design was featured on HGTV’s “Designer’s Challenge” in May. Faith was handpicked by the show’s producers to compete against other designers for the living room makeover of Mount Pleasant couple, Brian and Amy Mahoney. During the episode, Faith’s renovation plan is selected. Faith transformed a living room into a family entertainment area.
