A line of childrens picture books from Mount Pleasant-based Sylvan Dell Publishing has been selected for the Accelerated Reader Program. The program is a progress-monitoring tool in which children read books and then take quizzes to test their reading comprehension.
The South Carolina Arts Commission announced the 2006-2007 South Carolina Fiction Project honorees from Charleston: Jecca Hutcheson, Liz Scarborough and Anthony Varallo. The project supports the growth and development of writers in South Carolina and each honoree receives $500 for first-publication rights from The Post and Courier.

The South Atlantic League named the Charleston RiverDogs baseball club and the Greensboro Grasshoppers as co-recipients of the leagues Club Merit Award for outstanding overall operation by an organization.

Ashley Bakery received two first-place awards at the Southeastern Retail Bakery Associations annual convention. Its pumpkin pecan torte won the torte and cake division and its loggerhead sea turtle-shaped cake won the custom-designed cake division. Owner Eileen Ferri created the torte recipe and designer Hayden Campbell fabricated the loggerhead cake.
Charleston writer Scott Yarbough is one of six South Carolina artists awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship by the S.C. Arts Commission. Yarbough will receive $2,500 in recognition for his prose.

Teachers from Bishop England High School, Trident Academy and Academic Magnet High School were named finalists in The Citadels annual Lowcountry Spanish Teacher of the Year program. The finalists were Chad Everett Allan of Bishop England High School, Keri Peterson of Trident Academy and Eileen Hilera Shields of Academic Magnet High School. The three teachers were selected from nominees from Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.

The award is based on the Carrier Navigator Program, a dealer development program recognizing sales performance and outstanding operational evaluations.
82 Queen celebrated its 25th anniversary at its location in downtown Charleston. In honor of the event, owners Joe Sliker and Steve Kish sold 25th anniversary merchandise to raise money for the Hollings Cancer Center to support its research and life-saving efforts.
Two Guinness Book of World Records marks for fastest rounds of golf were set at Patriots Point Links on Charleston Harbor by 35 golfers, who are all employed as caddies at the Kiawah Island Club. The first record of 8 minutes, 46 seconds bettered the previous Guinness record by one second. The time for fastest round of golf allows for golfers on the subsequent hole to start once the previous hole is complete, eliminating the need to physically transfer the same golf ball. The second record of 14 minutes, 4 seconds for one-ball continuous play, is the first of its kind to be recognized by Guinness Book of World Records. For the second record, the same ball must be played through all 18 holes, even though multiple players on each hole may play the ball.
The United States Tennis Association has chose Daniel Islands Family Circle Tennis Center to host a Welcome Back to Tennis national training session. The goal of this training session is to educate certified USTA instructors and volunteers on the proper way to hold USTA Welcome Back to Tennis programs at their home facilities across the country, further growing the game of tennis within the baby boomer generation.
