Santee Cooper completes construction of state’s first solar power site
Santee Cooper has completed construction on South Carolina’s first solar Green Power site, and is planning an Oct. 31 unveiling of the project.
The utility and Coastal Carolina University collaborated on the eight-month-long project, installing solar panels atop four multi-purpose pavilions on the university’s campus in Conway.
The installation includes special metering equipment that produces real-time statistics on how much electricity is being generated at any moment. A nearby Web-based exhibit will include access to site-performance data and additional renewable energy information.
Charleston Water System upgrades Hanahan plant
A new perimeter fence and sensory equipment are among the security improvements designed to protect Charleston Water System’s Hanahan Water Treatment Plant from acts of sabotage or vandalism. The plant is a source of drinking water for more than 400,000 people in the greater Charleston area.
The improvements were recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency following Sept. 11. All water utilities were required to submit a vulnerability report to the EPA listing potential vulnerabilities. That report formed the basis of the security improvements, which cost about $2 million and were funded by Charleston Water System’s 2003 revenue bond issue.
Television series pilot shooting in Charleston
Touchstone Television is currently shooting “Army Wives,” a pilot episode for a proposed television series set in Charleston.
“Army Wives” revolves around a young woman from the other side of the tracks who marries a soldier and moves her children to an Army base, where she befriends a diverse group of Army wives. It is the first project Touchstone Television, a division of the Walt Disney Co., has shot in South Carolina. The pilot has been picked up by Lifetime Television.
