Local utility changes name to clarify services it renders

The Commissioners of Public Works adopted a new logo and changed its name to Charleston Water System on Jan. 1.

“We decided that after 88 years as the Commissioners of Public Works, it was time to re-evaluate whether that name accurately describes our services,” said Charleston Water System CEO John Cook. “The term ‘public works’ includes services that Charleston Water System does not provide, such as storm water drainage, garbage collection and road and sidewalk repair. We believe that by adopting a more descriptive name, we can better serve the public by eliminating confusion.”

Charleston Water System provides water and wastewater services to the greater Charleston area but is often confused with other public works agencies in the Lowcountry.

In addition to the new name and logo, Charleston Water System has a new Web site, www.charlestonwater.com, which features detailed information about the utility’s operations and services.

Charleston Water System was established in 1917 as an independent municipal corporation. The company will legally retain the name Commissioners of Public Works of the City of Charleston, which will continue to be used in corporate documents.

Charleston Water System provides water service to nearly 400,000 people and wastewater service to some 170,000 people in the Lowcountry. The public utility has 420 employees.

Local engineering firm to celebrate 90 years

B.P. Barber & Associates Inc. will celebrate its 90th year in business during 2006. During that time, BPB has grown from a single office in Columbia to six offices in three states and more than 180 employees. In 2005, BPB was recognized as one of the top 500 design firms in the county by the Engineering News-Record, a weekly trade newspaper for the construction industry.

BPB offers a wide array of services ranging from water and wastewater engineering, land planning, design and site development services, roadway design, storm water management, landscape architecture and surveying, to solid waste management, structural and electrical design, permitting and regulatory assistance, geographic information systems, environmental management, health and safety services, and grant/loan administration assistance.

Company introduces new Web site

Employer Benefits Strategies Inc., a Summerville-based employee benefits insurance agency, recently introduced its new Web site, www.employerbenefitsstrategies.com.

“We took a long time in considering what we wanted to convey on our site,” said EBSI President Todd Stephenson. “We wanted to be more of a resource to the public rather than just telling what our agency can do for you. So we added links to various health and wellness sites (and) some human resources topics, as well as federal and state government sites.

“We also want to let everyone know they can do their own individual or family health insurance quotes on-line through our Web site, as well as apply for coverage once they have decided on their plan choice.”
