Successful blood drive comes at crucial time
Atlantic Island Properties August blood drive, held in cooperation with Bohicket Marina on Johns Island, was a success, netting enough blood to save more than 50 lives. At the end of July, the American Red Cross announced that South Carolina hospitals had less than one days supply of blood, making the need to donate this summer even greater than at other times of the year. Allstate donates $500 to Charleston Habitat
The Allstate Foundation has recognized local agent Wally Burbages volunteer efforts in the community by awarding a $500 donation to Charleston Habitat for Humanity. Allstates Agency Hands In the Community program recognizes agents for their outstanding commitment to community service with a donation to the charitable organization where they volunteer.
Local AFCEA hands out six science scholarships
The Lowcountry chapter of the Armed Forces Communication and Electronics Association has awarded six $3,000 scholarships to high school seniors who plan to major in science and engineering when they enter college this fall. This years recipients, with their high school and college of choice, are: Katie Ashworth, Fort Dorchester High School, Winthrop; Jessica Pinner, Fort Dorchester High School, Clemson; Ben Halpern, Porter-Gaud, Cornell; John Burton, Porter-Gaud, Duke; Grayson Schleppegrell, West Ashley High School, Clemson; and Steven Maclin, Burke High School, College of Charleston.
More than 500 books sent to New Orleans school
During July, Charleston area Barnes & Noble bookstores took part in the franchises book drive to provide books for schools in Louisiana and Mississippi that had been damaged during the 2005 hurricane season. The Charleston area stores supported Martin Behrman Elementary School in New Orleans, collecting 564 books. Throughout the Southeast, Barnes & Noble stores collected more than 30,000 books to replenish school libraries throughout the region.
