Business, employees donate to tsunami relief

A number of local businesses and corporations have donated money to the victims of last December’s tsunami in Southeast Asia. Food Lion gave a $50,000 cash contribution to the American Red Cross. Food Lion also provided employees and customers with an opportunity to make cash donations. Verizon Wireless enabled customers to make donations to CARE, a humanitarian organization fighting poverty. Using their phone’s text message feature, Verizon customers donated to the relief efforts. Verizon Wireless employees who contributed to the American Red Cross or United Nations Children’s Fund were matched 2-to-1 by the Verizon Foundation. Employee donations and the matching funds totaled more than $4.5 million in donations. The foundation also contributed $100,000 to Save the Children and Mercy Corps on behalf of donations from the company’s retirees. South Carolina Federal Credit Union is matching donations to Water Missions International, which is providing clean water to tsunami victims—up to $10,000. S.C. Federal also will accept donations from area credit unions on behalf of WMI through March 31. On Feb. 12, several Charleston restaurants donated 10% of their dinner sales to Water Missions International: Fulton Five, Circa 1886, T-Bonz, Sticky Fingers and Tommy Condon’s participated. Also, Basil restaurant raised $10,000 for the fundraiser as part of an auction and dinner on Jan. 29. Chai’s Lounge and Tapas also raised $10,000 for Dine Together Charleston. Spa Adagio donated 5% of all its gift certificate sales during the month of February. Trident United Way’s 2-1-1 Hotline and other organizations operating as The Charleston Humanitarian Aid and Relief Team sponsored the Bowen’s Island Benefit for Tsunami Relief. The event, featuring six local bands, raised about $11,000 for Water Missions International.

Businesses take part in local home makeover show

James and Selena Hamm received a surprise Feb. 11 when they found their home was remodeled as part of ABC New 4’s $100,000 Extreme Home Makeover. South Carolina Federal Credit Union gave $5,000 for incidentals. Selena has multiple sclerosis and is confined to a wheelchair, so the Hamms’ home has been remodeled to make the living space more accessible. Other vendors contributing to the project were Kalman Construction Corp., G&S Windows and Doors, Interiors by Flooring Services, Haddigan Electrical Contractors and The Woodlands.
