Wise Guys take a trip to a Carolina Panthers game

Andy Casson, a student support specialist for the nonprofit Communities In Schools’ Wise Guys project, took a group of his students to the Carolina Panthers’ home football game in Charlotte on Oct. 30. Team officials provided the tickets for the game. The Wise Guys’ project teaches middle school boys about making responsible health choices. Specialist Chris Rollison serves students at James Island Middle School and the peninsular Middle Grades Acceleration Project program at Rivers Middle School. Casson works at Ft. Johnson Middle School. A third specialist, Earnest Houston, sponsors Wise Guys at Haut Gap Middle School on Johns Island. The Wise Guys curriculum places an emphasis on taking responsibility for one’s actions and encourages service-learning among the students. The boys who went to the Panthers game act as role models for youngsters through the “Real Men Read” of Wise Guys, wherein older adolescents read to fourth- and fifth-graders.
