Lowcountry Medical Associates PC has been awarded the Laboratory Excellence Award from the Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation, the premier accreditation program for physician office laboratories. COLA’s accreditation is awarded to laboratories that apply to rigorous standards of quality in day-to-day operations, demonstrate continued accuracy in the performance of proficiency testing and pass a comprehensive on-site laboratory survey.

Roper St. Francis Healthcare has received 62 national awards recognizing patient, medical staff and employee satisfaction in key areas, including teamwork between physicians, nurses and staff; overall quality of nursing care; physicians’ explanation of treatments and tests; quality of discharge instructions; and total time spent in emergency departments. The awards include 24 Top Performer Awards for scoring at or above the 100th percentile; 19 Five-Star Awards for scoring in top 10th percentile; and 17 Four-Star Awards for achieving a score in the top quartile for overall quality of care. In addition, the health care organization received the Platinum Achievement Award for Roper Hospital’s Inpatient Oncology Department and the Overall Top Performer Award for Roper St. Francis Goose Creek Medical Center.

Lou DuBon and Michael S. Mauldin have joined Charleston Southern University’s board of visitors. DuBon is senior manager of human resources with AGFA Corp. in Goose Creek. Mauldin is the president of New Pond Associates. Both will serve on the board until Dec. 31, 2008.

PROforma Print Solutions has upgraded its Web site, http://proformaft.logomall.com ,, and added new promotional products that can be used as advertising specialties, business gifts or recognition awards. The search functions are now versatile enough to allow users to type in either a product description or a keyword to find a product.

Candace Palmer was recently awarded the Pacesetter Platinum Award from Century 21 Real Estate Corp. To achieve the Pacesetter Platinum Award, Palmer recorded a minimum of $95,000 in adjusted gross commissions or 30 units as of the end of June 2005.

Celina P. Anthony, a Spanish teacher at West Ashley High School since 1997, was recently named the 2005 Lowcountry Spanish Teacher of the Year by The Citadel’s chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society. Anthony, a native of Peru, was among three finalists for the award, which was presented for the second consecutive year to recognize outstanding Spanish teachers in K-12 schools in Berkeley, Dorchester and Charleston counties. In addition to sponsoring the school’s Spanish Club, Anthony is coordinator of the West Ashley High School Multicultural Festival and has taught Spanish to adults in the West Ashley Community Education program since 2001. She is also a teacher mentor for Spanish teacher candidates from the College of Charleston.

Consulting design firm Seamon, Whiteside & Associates Inc. celebrated its 20th anniversary in October. On Oct. 20, principals Kenny Seamon, Stuart Whiteside and Lee Gastley joined with staff, clients, friends and family to mark the event by sharing food, drinks, music and a fond look back at the firm’s first two decades.

F. Creighton McMaster was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree by the College of Charleston. The degree was presented to McMaster by College of Charleston president Lee Higdon and College of Charleston Board of Trustees Chairman Robert W. Marlowe.

LS3P Associates Ltd.’s image studio was recently honored at the 2005 ASID Carolinas Chapter Design Specialty Awards in Charlotte, N.C., with seven design awards: honor awards for Just Fresh Restaurants, Nexen Pruet Law Firm and Charleston Cancer Center (in collaboration with Haute Design Inc.) and merit awards for Peoples Building Leasing Center, Women’s Health Partners, LS3P Associates Ltd. corporate offices and Pearlstine Distributors Inc.

Maddux Supply Company, a distributor of electrical and lighting products in the Southeast, has recently been certified as a Women’s Business Enterprise.

Sandra Gilliard, chief financial officer at St. James-Santee Family Health Center Inc., was honored by the South Carolina Primary Health Care Association as the “Finance Professional of the Year” at their 22nd annual conference. Gilliard received the award in recognition of her excellent financial management skills demonstrated in a community-based health care setting.

Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce’s Area Business Council Small Business of the Month winners for September were PST Computer Training Inc., Ingrid Tugwell, owner; North Area Business Council; S&ME Inc., Michael Ulmer, geotechnical department manager; East Cooper Area Business Council; and Charleston City Paper, Noel Mermer, publisher; Charleston Area Business Council.

The Verizon Wireless Health & Wellness Team received the 2005 Wellness Council of America’s “Well Work Place” GOLD Award. The award was designed by WELCOA to recognize quality and excellence in health promotion programming at the worksite. The Verizon team is the only company to receive the award on a national level.

Roper St. Francis Healthcare announced that it will name the seventh floor surgical pavilion in Roper Hospital’s new patient care tower in memory of Dr. Julian T. Buxton Jr., the system’s first board chairman. The tower, including the Buxton Surgical Pavilion, will be completed in March 2006.

Keep Charleston Beautiful received the Keep South Carolina Beautiful “Program of the Year Award for Litter Reduction” at the September KSCB Leadership Forum. The award recognized My City Is NOT Your Ashtray, Keep Charleston Beautiful’s cigarette litter prevention program.

Jeff Olive, director of quality control and a certified master auto glass technician with GlassPro, took home the trophy in the first Auto Glass Technician Olympics at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, winning $5,000. Randy Chadwick, senior auto glass technician with GlassPro, took third and a $500 prize. The field of 24 competitors was judged according to the Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standard by three long-time industry figures: Bob Beranek with Automotive Glass Consultants, Steve Coyle of Performance Achievement Group and Gilbert Gutierrez with Equalizer Industries and the Auto Glass Academy.

Ann Howell has been named “SPAWARRIOR of the Quarter.” Howell is the deputy for small business and the small business program manager at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center. Howell also recently received the Administrator’s Leadership Award from the Small Business Administration for her commitment to ensuring that small businesses have equal access to procurement opportunities to foster their business growth and development.

The American Bankruptcy Law Journal recently published an article by Moore & Van Allen partner David Wheeler and associate Doug Wedge concerning the latest changes to the bankruptcy code. The article is entitled, “A Fully-Informed Decision: Reaffirmation, Disclosure and the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005.”

The S.C. Arts Commission awarded the Lowcountry Housing & Economic Development Foundation of Charleston County a $5,000 Cultural Visions grant. The funding will help support “Marsh Made in the Lowcountry,” a project that involves the creation, marketing and sale of artistic creations of Charleston County elderly and youth from rural and economically distressed areas. The project is intended to facilitate an exchange of arts interpretation between youth and senior participants. It will culminate at the Jr./Sr. Art Exhibit, which is held in association with Charleston’s Moja Arts Festival. Participants’ art will be exhibited and sold with proceeds benefiting their associations and guilds.

Jane Riley, executive director of Communities In Schools of the Charleston Area Inc., announced that the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina has awarded the dropout prevention agency $6,500 from its 2005 Open Grants program. The Communities In Schools’ application focused on funding after-school and summer programs for boys.

Steve Peper was awarded the Agency Hands in the Community Award from Allstate for his commitment to the community. With this award comes a $500 grant from The Allstate Foundation to the Charleston Men’s Chorus. Allstate agents are recognized for their outstanding commitment to community service with a $500 donation to the charitable organization where they volunteer.

Richard H. Behling, chairman of the St. George “New Century” Industrial Park, was named 2005 Economic Development Ambassador for Dorchester County as part of Industrial Appreciation Week in a ceremony in Columbia at the Governor’s Mansion.

Tricounty Family Ministries announced that it has received an $8,000 open grant from the Coastal Community Foundation. This grant will support the Healing Hands Ministry programs that are being offered by TFM to those people that have to make the difficult choice between medication and food because of little or no income.

Bridget Dewees, director of quality at Trident Technical College, has received the South Carolina Champion of Excellence award from the South Carolina Quality Forum. The Champion of Excellence award is given each year to a leader who has helped facilitate an organization’s quest for excellence through strategic planning, customer satisfaction, continuous improvement, quality leadership and human resource development.

DPS Development Company LLC took home four awards at the AIGA In Show Gala. The S.C. AIGA In Show is a statewide competition honoring design excellence. The award-winning pieces were produced by the company’s advertising agency, led by director of marketing Sharon Bruner and creative director Wade Harris. The four pieces, an identity package and invitation for Snake River Sporting Club in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and a referral card and invitation for Turks & Caicos Sporting Club at Ambergris Cay, British West Indies, were created by designers Kim Hightower and Joe Pohl, with art direction by Harris and copy by copywriter Jenny Badman.

Charleston-based niki leigh spa parties are now available in Los Angeles and soon to be in Atlanta. Honor Hawkins manages the Los Angeles party division, and Amy Zeldin will run the Atlanta party division.

Kevin Shealy was awarded the Agency Hands in the Community Award for his commitment to volunteering in the community. With this award comes a $500 grant from The Allstate Foundation that will be given to the American National Red Cross.

Lowcountry Case & Millwork received a national award from the Architectural Woodwork Institute. LCCM was one of 12 award recipients. Robert Stasiakaitis, the owner, traveled to San Diego to receive this award.
