ARCHITECTURE & ENGINEERING

WPC Inc., a geotechnical and construction services engineering firm, has expanded its marketing team with the addition of Sam Pruett as a business development representative. Pruett will be responsible for new business development and sales initiatives in the Columbia market. WPC has also promoted Thomas Casey from geotechnical services manager to branch manager of the Myrtle Beach office and Edward Hajduk from senior geotechnical engineer to geotechnical services manager of the Mount Pleasant office. Casey is responsible for managing WPC’s Myrtle Beach branch office, including strategic planning to tactical engineering activities. Hajduk is responsible for managing all of the geotechnical services for the Mount Pleasant branch office.

Christen Goodin Kirkwood has joined Glick/Boehm & Associates as an intern architect. Kirkwood holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Mississippi State University and will work on educational, medical and liturgical projects.

Mount Pleasant-based consulting landscape architecture and civil engineering design firm Seamon, Whiteside & Associates Inc. has expanded its landscape architecture department with the addition of three new employees. Glen E. Deal, formerly with EDAW in Atlanta, is a senior landscape architect. Rodney H. Porter, who holds a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Georgia, is a project coordinator focusing on commercial and mixed-use projects. Anthony Cerenzia is the newest addition to the urban design department and will be working with both public and private sector clients providing conceptual master plans, site planning and design, presentation graphics and construction documents.

J. Rhett Reidenbach has been promoted from associate to vice president of the architectural/engineering division at Davis & Floyd Inc. As a registered professional engineer, Reidenbach has extensive experience in the design and management of multi-disciplined engineering projects, including subdivisions, commercial and industrial developments, schools, water distribution, wastewater collection, stormwater management and roadways.

General Engineering & Environmental LLC announced the addition of Walt Dunlap. Dunlap has worked as a licensed professional land surveyor since 1985 and is also licensed in Maine. He will be providing surveying oversight as well as construction management for large engineering projects.

Robert F. Clair has joined HDR as vice president and South Carolina program manager based in HDR’s Charleston office. Clair will be responsible for leading business development and expanding HDR’s presence in South Carolina, with initial emphasis on Charleston and surrounding counties. Previously, Clair was director of engineering for special projects for the South Carolina Department of Transportation. He successfully led the $632 million Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge project.

Dolphin Architects and Builders has added three professionals to its staff. Al Abate, director of architecture, holds a degree from the University of Cincinnati and has worked with a number of major regional firms. Abate will oversee all aspects of Dolphin’s architectural department. Regina Crawford, director of sales and marketing, has more than 12 years of experience in the Charleston area, serving with the Kiawah Island Architectural Review Board in an administrative capacity, Kiawah Island Real Estate as a contract administrator and as a licensed real estate professional for five years. Jennifer Starrett, client relations manager, has seven years of experience with a large brokerage firm servicing and maintaining client relationships.

NEW BUSINESS

The Original Take and Bake Kitchen opened its first location in Mount Pleasant at the Queensborough shopping center next to the Publix off of Anna Knapp Boulevard. The Original Take and Bake Kitchen offers customers the ability to provide home-style meals with no preparation and no planning, serve reasonably priced meals with little effort and care for their families with a healthier alternative to drive-thru and take out meals.

Chick-fil-A operator Daniel Dickerson is transferring back to Charleston to open a new location on Dorchester Road. Dickerson will use the opening to support the American Red Cross’ efforts on behalf of the victims of Hurricane Katrina by becoming a drop off point for monetary donations and matching donations up to $1,000 on opening day.

Verizon Wireless opened a new retail store in Summerville Sept. 19. In honor of Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine program to benefit victims of domestic violence, Verizon Wireless will donate $1,000 to My Sister’s House, a nonprofit agency providing services to victims of domestic violence in Summerville and its surrounding communities.

Lyn Mettler, a former journalist and public relations professional, recently opened Mettler Public Relations in Mount Pleasant. Mettler, a freelance writer, has worked in public relations for the past nine years, most recently as an account director for E. Boineau & Co.

Weichert, Realtors recently opened a new office at 1937 East Clements Ferry Road.

ALCUS Financial Group LLC, a firm providing financial planning and investment management services, has opened a new office located in the Stratis Business Center on Bowman Road.

Sound Solutions, located at 4139 Rivers Ave. in North Charleston, opened in August. Robert Vick is the owner/installer. He sells and installs car sound systems, alarms and remote starts, and also specializes in custom installations.

North Charleston’s newest Zaxby’s, located at 6924 Rivers Ave., will open in October. Licensees Tripp Clayton, Chap Johnston and his sons, Chip and Ben, say the restaurant will create an additional 40 jobs for the area.

Amy Reed has launched a new multimedia advertising firm called Helium. Reed has previously been the art director for Charleston magazines, the senior art director for The Bosworth Group and the creative lead for Sans Locus.

LAW

Buist Moore Smythe McGee PA announced that Timothy C. Dargan has become an associate of the firm. Dargan, who received his law degree from the University of Denver College of Law in 2003, was most recently a law clerk for the Hon. C. Weston. Dargan’s areas of practice are business litigation, environmental, employment, admiralty and products liability law.

MEDIA & MARKETING

Rawle Murdy Associates, a marketing, advertising and public relations firm, has hired Michelle Evans as the media director. Evans is responsible for developing and overseeing media strategies for Rawle Murdy and its clients. Evans previously worked as the associate media director at Zimmerman Partners/OMD for the past four years.

TECHNOLOGY

Teleco announced the hiring of Michael Faucette as a procurement specialist. Faucette brings five years of telecommunications experience to this position, most recently working with Universal Solutions as the office manager and inventory control/purchasing manager. Also joining Teleco is Cheryl Slawson. Slawson will serve in customer service, taking service calls and managing technician time logs and accounts payable. Greg Balcerzak joined Teleco’s technician team. Balcerzak brings seven years of construction, cabling and wiring experience and will serve as a structured wire technician. Teleco also announced two promotions: Tammy Perritt, who has served as a project manager for the past 18 months, is now operations manager. Perritt will be responsible for all customer service and installations, managing a team of nine technicians, schedulers and warehouse personnel. Kyle Nicholson, Teleco’s operations manager, will move to head the customer advocacy team. Nicholson has been with Teleco for 12 years and will provide post-sale assistance, education and make recommendations to clients for ongoing support, upgrades and enhancements.

The SIM Group announced the hiring of Fred H. Burnett to the position of IT operations manager. Burnett brings more than 20 years of experience in information systems and corporate networking. He will oversee all computer and information technology systems for The SIM Group and its 17 subsidiaries.

FINANCE

New South Mortgage Corp. announced the hiring of Hank Campbell and Neal Davis. Davis joined the Mount Pleasant office as a mortgage consultant. He attended the College of Charleston and holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from N.C. Wesleyan University. Campbell brings more than seven years of customer service and sales experience. He attended the University of South Carolina where he earned his degree in criminal justice.

Tim Scheatzle has joined Bank of America as a mortgage account executive. Scheatzle was previously with Bank of America and Wachovia as a senior financial specialist for eight years. He is a graduate of the College of Charleston.

Marcy Priester has joined the Mount Pleasant office of Raven Mortgage Bankers as an account executive. Priester was formerly a vice president at First Virginia Bank and has 25 years of experience in lending.

Carrie Lanning has joined the tax department of Pratt-Thomas, Gumb & Co. PA. Lanning previously worked for Dixon Hughes PLLC in Charlotte, N.C,. and will concentrate on tax preparation and planning.

NONPROFIT

Mount Pleasant Open Space Foundation announced the hiring of Tracey Stapleton as the land conservation organization’s new executive director. A graduate of the College of Charleston’s Corporate Communications Program, Stapleton was previously the development and communications director for the Lowcountry Food Bank where she was responsible for grant development, fundraising/special events and donor relations’ activities.

Trident United Way announced several new staff members. Cheryl Harleston is the new increasing self-sufficiency coordinator. She is the former director of community relations for the city of Spartanburg and holds a master’s degree in applied sociology from Clemson University. Wendy McCormick is the new vice president of major gifts. She has served as the director of field services for the March of Dimes and most recently was a director of philanthropy for the Nature Conservancy. Susan Sutton is the director of early care and education. Most recently, she served as the executive director of First Steps in Horry County and holds a master’s degree in education from Virginia Tech.

HOSPITALITY

John Hall has been hired as the new banquet chef for Fish. He will be responsible for all catering events, including events at the William Aiken House and The American, as well as for catered events off property. Hall was formally with Cost as Chef de Cuisine. Sven Lindroth has been promoted to sous chef at Fish. Lindroth has been with Fish for one year.

RETAIL

Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. Inc. announced the following position changes. Katie Lee fills the position of gift card coordinator and marketing analyst. David Benenhaley was named director of risk management. Sheila Hayward was named marketing services manager. Bert Motley was named as district manager. Vince Lehr was named category manager in the buying department. Mike Mock will be the retail-pricing manager. Mychael Thomas is the assistant pricing manager.

ACE USA, the U.S.-based retail operating division of The ACE Group of Companies, announced that Jim Shevlin has been named assistant vice president and regional business development manager for ACE USA’s Southeast region. Shevlin will manage distribution, product sales and marketing, and producer relationships for ACE USA’s Southeast region, which comprises North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Florida.

California Closets hired three new team members to its sales and design staff: Beth Rhode, Dave Parlet and Michael Dillon. Rhode has five years of closet designing experience and will serve as a full-time designer in the Charleston area. Parlet, a retired engineer, will serve as the local designer for the Myrtle Beach/Georgetown areas. Dillon will serve as a local designer for Hilton Head, Beaufort and Savannah, Ga.

HEALTH CARE

Vories Medical Group has added Ronald Kirk to its surgical staff. Kirk, a resident of Orlando, Fla., has worked in hair transplantation for 12 years and will assist Dr. Michael Vories in patient procedures. Kirk will also provide staffing, training and technology services.

Dr. Anne Schiller Flynn joined Coastal Pathology Laboratories as director of cytopathogy. For the past four years Flynn has been medical director of cytopathology for Pathology Sciences Medical Group in Norfolk, Va. She is board-certified in cytopathology, anatomic pathology and clinical pathology.

Argolyn Bioscience, a biopharmaceutical company, announced the addition of Dr. David Feifel as a translational research consultant and the newest member of its scientific advisory board. Feifel is an associate professor in residence in the department of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego where his neuropsychopharmacology laboratory develops animal models to explore the biological mechanisms of psychiatric disease and potential novel therapeutics focusing on neuropeptide-based treatments.

Lowcountry Medical Associates welcomed three new physicians: Dr. Christopher P. McLain joins Associates in Internal Medicine in Charleston; Dr. Tina Marie Botelho joins East Cooper Internal Medicine in Mount Pleasant and Dr. Amy Lucas joins West Ashley Internal Medicine in Charleston. McLain received his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2002 and is board certified/board eligible in internal medicine. Botelho received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2001 and is board eligible in internal medicine. Lucas received her medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2002 and is board certified/board eligible in internal medicine.

MANUFACTURING

Linde Material Handling-North America, a manufacturer of industrial lift trucks, recently announced the following personnel appointments: Rich Bevington has joined Linde as its regional sales manager for the North Central Region. Bevington was most recently a sales manager in the Linde dealer network. Mike Paul, currently regional sales manager for Linde’s dealers in the Northeast United States, will assume the additional responsibility for the company’s dealers in central and eastern Canada.

Shawn McCarthy has joined Image Network LLC as an account executive. McCarthy will focus on the sale of screen-printed and embroidered garments for corporate clients in the tri-county area.

SHIPPING

Raymond Kelley has been promoted to vice president of operations for Rogers & Brown Custom Brokers Inc. Kelley has been with Rogers & Brown for 18 years. His previous position with the company was director of import and entry operations. In his new position, Kelley is responsible for all of Rogers & Brown’s operations, which include the import, customs entry, export and transportation departments.

EDUCATION

Carolyn Morales has been named the associate vice president of diversity at the College of Charleston. Morales will coordinate the development and implementation of campus wide plans to promote diversity. She was previously the assistant dean of students for intercultural programs and services at Wells College in Aurora, N.Y.
