Weichert Family of Companies gives to Katrina recovery

The Weichert Family of Companies announced that it has contributed $1.316 million to the American Red Cross to support relief and recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The total figure resulted from the donations of sales associates and employees throughout the Weichert Family of Companies and additional dollar-for-dollar matching provided by Jim Weichert, founder and president of Weichert, Realtors. East Shore Athletic Club hosts marathon fundraiser

The East Shore Athletic Club hosted Run & Ride for Lives, a marathon fundraising event for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The club raised $5,695 for relief efforts. Publix gives to Lowcountry Food Bank

Publix, Merchants Village on James Island, and Jim Bongalis, Publix store manager, presented a $10,092 check to Jermaine Husser, Lowcountry Food Bank’s operating officer. This gift was made possible from the generous donations made by Publix customers in the Charleston area to Food For All, Food Industry Crusade Against Hunger.

Lowcountry residents participate in heart walk

More than 3,700 Lowcountry residents came out to Liberty Square next to the South Carolina Aquarium to participate in the American Heart Association’s Lowcountry Heart Walk presented by MUSC Heart and Vascular Center. The event raised $100,000 more than last year. Funds raised currently total $450,000, with additional money expected. Participants walked the 3-mile course around historic downtown Charleston and visited the Health Expo for blood pressure and glucose screenings and lifesaving health information. Children also participated in activities and crafts at the Kids Corner.

Chefs donate time, skills, food for Katrina victims’ relief

Twenty-five of Charleston’s chefs organized a benefit entitled “Charleston Chefs for Hurricane Relief” held Sept. 12 at Charleston Place Hotel’s Grand Ballroom in response to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Each chef donated time, food and services for one night with all proceeds from the $150 minimum donation admission going directly to the American Red Cross. The proceeds from a special silent auction supported Water Missions International—a company providing several Living Water Treatment Systems/Reverse Osmosis Units to Louisiana and Mississippi. During the evening, live entertainment was provided by Frank Duval Trio and Shrimp City Slim. Floral arrangements were displayed by Tiger Lily and Bloom. Wine was provided by Grassroots, Ben Arnold-Sunbelt, Southern Wine and Spirits, Coastal Wine and Beverage, National Distributing Co., Advintage Distributing, Vinifera Imports, Grapevine Distributors, Carolina Wine Source, Chavon, Aleph, Crompton-Kennedy Fine Wine and beer provided by Pearlstine Distributors. The event’s host and organizer, Charleston Place Hotel, secured the grand ballroom, rental equipment, tables, chairs, linens, staffing and more. Foundation supports relief effort for pets following Katrina

Rescue Resource Foundation, a nonprofit that supports the collaborative efforts of South Carolina animal rescue groups, coordinated a relief drive that collected more than eight tons of supplies for the animals affected by Hurricane Katrina. The relief supplies consisted of cat and dog food, litter, leashes, crates, collars, towels and blankets. Twelve local pet businesses donated supplies, including All Is Well, Alpha Dog Omega Cat, Dolittle’s, Indigo Creek, Kreature Comforts and Palmetto Paws.

Piggly Wiggly donates to disaster relief fund

Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. Inc., on behalf of its 5,000 employee-owners, made a corporate gift of $25,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund in response to the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. Piggly Wiggly stores are also accepting donations at the registers where customers have the option of making a contribution added to their purchase. Their donation to the American Red Cross will be recorded on their register receipt. All donations will be distributed to victims through the disaster relief fund.
