Eighth-graders explore area facilities:
Rising eighth-grade students in Trident Technical Colleges Manufacturing Summer Camp visited the American LaFrance manufacturing facility in Ladson on July 14 where they had the chance to watch as fire trucks and other emergency vehicles were assembled. During the camp held at TTC July 11-15, students also toured Alcoa Mt. Holly, Cummins Mercruiser Diesel and Holset Turbocharger facilities. The annual camp is sponsored by TTC, the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, the Lowcountry Manufacturers Council and the South Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership.
Students face the heat at Giant Cement:
During the summer, Giant Cement in Harleyville hires college students who are family members of plant employees to help with labor work, including working with 3,000-degree kilns. Medical center honored for cancer work:
Roper St. Francis Medical CenterBerkeley received top honors for mission delivery at a June 25 presentation hosted by the American Cancer Societys South Carolina Mission Delivery Summit in Columbia. Patricia Mack, RN, Roper St. Francis Oncology Research, received the Cancer Prevention Award for excellence in community cancer awareness and education. The Berkeley Medical Center and its team of volunteers were recognized for taking ownership of last years Relay for Life event by planning and organizing mission delivery activities that focused on lung, skin, colorectal and breast cancer screenings and related educational information. Mack was honored for assisting with the implementation of the American Cancer Society Community Development Grant, which was awarded to Roper Hospital to focus on colon cancer. Accepting the missions delivery award were, pictured from left, Resa Ulmer, RN, Lynn Morris, both from Berkeley Ambulatory Surgery Center, and Ashley Cashon of the American Cancer Society.
