An Argentinean gelato company is opening its first U.S. store on lower King Street in the summer, according to a news release.

Freddo — Italian for “cold” — will open in mid-August at 239 1/2 King St. and will offer 24 ice cream flavors. The new, 800-square-foot store is expected to hire 10 employees.

Established in 1969, Freddo operates more than 140 stores in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia and the United Kingdom, the news release said.

Freddo’s gelato is 100% fruit with no added flavoring, preservatives or vegetable fats, the company said. It will be available as single servings and in to-go packages.

The Charleston store will also sell smoothies, sundaes and specialty coffee.

Freddo selected Charleston because it is a “window to additional markets within the United States and Canada,” according to the company. Freddo’s second U.S. location is expected to open later this summer in Miami.
