New York company takes over concessions at Charleston airport

Delaware North Cos. took over the food and beverage concessions at Charleston International Airport on Saturday.

When the Terminal Redevelopment and Improvement Program is completed in September 2015, Delaware North will open its permanent lineup of six restaurants and bars.

In the interim, as construction continues at the airport, the company will provide temporary food service with three new restaurants alongside Dunkin’ Donuts and the Samuel Adams Bar. The Bogchi Grill; Triple B’s: Bar B Que, Bourbon, Burgers; and Caffe Siena will operate until the new lineup replaces them over the next 12 to 15 months, according to Victoria Hong, Delaware North’s director of corporate communications.

This is the company’s first venture in South Carolina. Delaware North will build out all of the new concepts at the airport. The investment was not disclosed.

The current food service vendor, SSP America Inc. of Lansdowne, Va., notified its 63 employees that they will be laid off as of May 31, according to a filing under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.

Employees of the outgoing food service vendor were offered opportunities to transition to Delaware North. Roughly 80% to 90% of SSP America employees will remain at the airport and work for Delaware North, according to Kevin Kelly, president of Delaware North Cos. Travel Hospitality Services.

“We will invest millions over the next three years so that travelers flying into and out of Charleston International will have premier concession options that will include local flavors from favorite regional restaurants,” Kelly said.  “When construction is complete, we expect travelers to look forward to making a stop at Charleston International.”

Delaware North Cos. is a 100-year-old, family-owned business based in Buffalo, N.Y. It operates food establishments in sports arenas, airports, hotels, parks and convention centers. It currently operates in 30 airports around the world.
