Comact Equipment U.S. Inc. plans to expand its manufacturing facility in Dorchester County with a $1.8 million investment and 60 new jobs, according to a news release from Gov. Nikki Haley’s office.

The expansion comes less than a year after Comact Equipment set up local operations. Comcast designs, manufactures and installs equipment for the sawmill and forestry industries.

The expansion will make room for an additional line that will produce log and timber-handling equipment used primarily for sawmills. Its 40,000-square-foot manufacturing space will grow by 3,500 square feet.

“Our decision to relocate some of our manufacturing to South Carolina in 2013 is paying off for us and our customers, and we look forward to growing our business in Dorchester County and specifically the great community of St. George,” Brian Fehr, CEO of The Bid Group of Companies, which owns Comact, said in a statement.

The Bid Group, a British Columbia-based equipment manufacturer for the forestry industry, employs more than 450 people in British Columbia, Quebec and St. George. The Dorchester County facility is located at 176 Academy Road in St. George.

“It is impressive that in less than a year since locating in Dorchester County, Comact is already expanding their St. George facility,” Dorchester County Council Chairman Bill Hearn said in a statement.
