Culture gives Sparc its edge, says Inc.

Calling Charleston-based Sparc a fearless company with big, crazy ideas, Inc. magazine’s editors named the software company one of 25 in the U.S. that are changing the world.

In its list of The 25 Most Audacious Companies, published in the May issue, Inc. pulled companies from five categories: technology, marketing, social impact, design and culture. Sparc made the culture category — which is also one of the tabs on Sparc’s home page.

The only company in South Carolina on the list, Sparc is included with some well-known names such as Beats Electronics, Upworthy, Eventbrite and Goldieblox. But many companies, while known in their region, don’t always get national exposure.

Inc. sent a reporter to talk to Sparc about what makes the company tick. CEO Eric Bowman said that employees aren’t allowed to have two bad days in a row and that everyone, including talent recruited straight out of college, is expected to contribute to the company’s culture and goals.

“The goal is to get as many people as possible to do the CEO’s job,” Bowman said in the Inc. story. “It’s about getting buy-in.”
