About 90 part-time and temporary S.C. State University employees received termination letters on Tuesday.
“Because of our financial situation, we’ve always known we would have to make some tough decisions,” S.C. State University President Thomas J. Elzey said in a statement. “These terminations were difficult, but necessary in order to help the university get back on track and recover.”
The terminated employees include administrative assistants, office coordinators, athletics staff members and security specialists, according to the university. Their duties will be reassigned to full-time employees.
This is the second round of layoffs at S.C. State since the university announced a deficit recovery plan to reduce a cash shortfall of more than $13 million.
Earlier this month, the S.C. Budget and Control Board approved a $6 million loan for the university, which it must repay within a year, to help pay down some debt. The money will be used to pay vendors who “provide essential services to the university, mainly food services and facilities and maintenance,” Elzey said.
“The loan given to us was a temporary lifeline, but it was not enough to resolve our current situation,” Elzey said. “Therefore, we continue to implement our recovery plan as we work with the governor and state lawmakers to reach a solution for the university’s long-term viability.”
