On the Menu for May 13, 2014

On the Menu provides the latest news from the Charleston area’s extensive culinary community, including new restaurants, new menu items and upcoming events, as well as details about local chefs. Submissions should be sent to dailyjournal@scbiznews.com.

Circa 1886 will keep extended hours during Spoleto Festival USA. The restaurant will open on May 25 for dinner and will serve dinner a half-hour earlier at 5 p.m. and close a half-hour later throughout the festival.


With the help of Palmetto Brewery, the Charleston RiverDogs will have their own special beer brewed exclusively for consumption at Riley Park. “The Original” is a light and balanced beer without dark roots or bitterness. It will be offered in the Palmetto Brewery Beer Garden throughout the 2014 RiverDogs season.


Five Charleston chefs join local fisherman Mark Marhefka of Abundant Seafood to present Trash Fish Dinner on June 5 at Lowndes Grove Plantation. The dinner benefits Chefs Collaborative and aims to showcase lesser known fish species traditionally left off the menu. The five-course, interactive event will be served up by Nico Romo of Fish Restaurant, Jason Stanhope of Fig Restaurant, Jeremiah Bacon of The Macintosh and Oak Steakhouse, Robert Stehling of Hominy Grill and Kevin Johnson of The Grocery.

Patrick Properties Hospitality Group and Romo of Fish Restaurant will host the event with Marhefka and additional speakers from the S.C. Aquarium and Chefs Collaborative.

Inspired by the Chefs Collaborative Sustainable Food Summit held in Charleston last year, Romo said he hopes chefs can help shift perceptions about species known as bycatch or “trash fish” that pose a challenge for local fishermen because they are not regarded as marketable and, therefore, virtually unknown to the public.

Ted's Butcherblock is holding its annual Backyard BBQ Bash from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday. This block party style event features outdoor grilling, local craft beer and live music from The Bushels. This year's menu will feature a Texas-style barbecue feast, including Painted Hills smoked brisket, homemade Texas-style hot links and homemade sides from the kitchen at Ted's.

The event also wraps up Ted's annual fundraising event for Feed the Need. Tickets for a chance to win a medium Big Green Egg are available now through Saturday at Ted’s, 334 East Bay St. in Charleston. The cost is $5 per ticket or five tickets for $20, and proceeds benefit Feed the Need, a local charity that engages the local culinary community to help feed the hungry. The drawing for the winner of the Big Green Egg prize package will take place at 4 p.m., during the Backyard BBQ Bash.
