Spoleto Festival USA officials unveiled the 2014 poster that will be featured as the program book cover this morning.
A work titled “New York VIII” by British artist Sir Antony Gormley will be the core poster image for the 17-day international performing arts festival held in Charleston, according to Spoleto Festival USA General Director Nigel Redden.
“This image for the 2014 poster conjures up the spirit of wonder and exploration that is so much a part of Spoleto Festival USA,” Redden said in a statement. “Like many of Gormley’s works, it enables viewers to create their own interpretation of whether the figure is looking at us or if we are looking at it, reflecting the experience of the best festival performances that not only give us something to watch, but also change us from within.”
Gormley was awarded the United Kingdom’s high-profile Turner Prize in 1994 and was knighted in the 2014 New Year’s Honours for services to the arts, according to a news release. His work frequently focuses on the human form and how it has a relation to the external space within, the release said.
The official poster is available for $25 by phone at 843-579-3100 or at the box office at the Charleston Visitor Center on Meeting Street. Spoleto Festival USA will feature more than 150 performances from May 23 through June 8.
