Gov. Nikki Haley announced Monday that she has selected Janet P. Oakley to become the secretary of the S.C. Department of Transportation, pending state Senate confirmation.

Oakley currently serves as the director of policy and government relations at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

“We are blessed to have somebody that has the expertise to come in and take the department to new heights,” said Haley. “Because of her extensive experience, Mrs. Oakley knows the issues at the local level, she understands the challenges at the state level and she already has relationships on the federal level, and we couldn’t be more confident that our state will benefit greatly from having her take over at the Department of Transportation.”

As director of policy and government relations at the highway and transportation officials association, Oakley is responsible for managing national transportation policy development on behalf of state transportation departments and directing the association’s freight, transit, aviation, intercity passenger rail, water, planning and environmental programs.

Including her work at transportation association, Oakley has more than 30 years of transportation-related work experience in both the public and private sectors at the federal, state, and local levels, the governor’s office said.

“I truly believe that I will be able to work with a great staff and use my breadth of experience and depth of knowledge to help the entire state of South Carolina,” said Janet Oakley. “I will call on the entire network of colleagues I have developed over the past 30 years in the field to help us as we move forward on this journey.”
