A second Charleston-area Kmart store is closing its doors this year.
West Ashley’s Kmart at 1535 Savannah Highway will close to the public in late April, according to Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holdings Corp., which owns Kmart.
“Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce ongoing expenses, adjust our asset base and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” Riefs said in a statement. “These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail — at the store, online and in the home.”
The 116,260-square-foot West Ashley store has 69 employees, and those associates who are eligible will receive severance, Riefs said. Employees are able to apply for positions at other Kmart and Sears stores.
The store, which sits on 12.5 acres and first opened in November of 1973, will begin its liquidation sale on Sunday, Riefs said.
In January, the Big Kmart at Johnnie Dodds Boulevard and Bowman Road in Mount Pleasant closed.
