Charleston County Council on Tuesday awarded Sonoco what could be a 10-year contract to run the county’s recycling services. Council approved Sonoco during a special meeting last night.

Previous coverage:

The contract includes two phases. For the first phase, Sonoco will run the county’s operations at the Romney Street facility for the next 18 months.

Details of the second phase are still being worked out, but it would include the remaining eight years on the contract and potentially running a new facility. A site at the Palmetto Commerce Parkway has been in discussions after a site near the Bees Ferry Landfill in West Ashley met some opposition from some local residents and the city of Charleston.

At County Council’s regular meeting last week, council members debated for hours over whether Sonoco or Repower South should manage the county’s operations. Last week they voted to extend Republic Services’ contract for 60 days, giving council more time to research the options. Council decided the matter last night instead. Republic’s contract expires Jan. 31.
