Health Care Hero
Employer: Roper St. Francis Healthcare
Dr. Damon Simpson treats everyone like family and commits each day to helping others. Simpson joined Roper St. Francis Physician Partners in 2010 after finishing his residency in general surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz.
He has an interest in, and skill for, complex surgical cases, and in one instance he agreed to treat a patient — and friend — who had been denied by seven surgeons because of the case’s complexity.
In his free time, Simpson volunteers overseas. He took his third mission trip to Kenya in June. There, he helped develop a surgery clinic that screens patients and performs mastectomies, splenectomies and hernia repairs. In 2012, he traveled to Honduras to establish another surgery clinic. Simpson has volunteered with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America organization. He coaches youth sports teams and co-founded the Medical University of South Carolina’s golf tournament that benefits Camp Happy Days.
