Brett Keisler grew up on a farm in South Carolina and worked as a technical assistant in a lab before deciding to go to school to be a registered nurse. Already in his 30s, Keisler found himself in class with younger students, and though somewhat intimidated to be back in school, Keisler finished his coursework and got a job at the emergency room at Roper St. Francis.
This year, Keisler won The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses because of the care and kindness he shows his patients and their families. Keisler also volunteers in his personal time with HALOS, a nonprofit for abused and neglected children, organizing donations of car seats, diapers, holiday gifts and back-to-school supplies. He also volunteers with a nonprofit in Columbia that organizes a prom night for intellectually and physically challenged young people.
