Health Care Heroes for 2013

Staff Report
Published Dec. 16, 2013

For nine years, the Charleston Regional Business Journal has honored Health Care Heroes living and working in our community.

So many people are doing such great, selfless work in the medical, public safety and health sectors, picking the winners each year often becomes a daunting task because so many are deserving. We have tried to honor the best of the best in eight health care categories. We presented awards in each category, with the top award being the Health Care Hero, followed by two finalists.

On the webpages linked below, you will read about the winners and learn what they have done in our community and beyond. Three judges independently scored nominations in eight categories: Community Outreach, Physician, Nurse, Volunteer, Health Care Professional, Health Care Researcher, First Responder, and a new category this year, Trident Construction Health Care Engineer.

The nominations were judged on the overall impact each individual or team had on individuals, the community and beyond. Judges also scored the nominations based on difficulty and challenges beyond the call of duty, as well as any unexpected sacrifices a nominee made or continues to make.

Thank you to our judges: George Stevens of the Coastal Community Foundation; Chappy McKay of Trident Construction; and Andy Owens of the Business Journal.

We want to thank all the winners, and those nominated, for what they do for our community on a daily basis.
