The number of $1 million taxpayers in South Carolina increased by 0.02% over the past decade, according to data released by Bloomberg.
South Carolina ranked No. 28 in the country, with 1,951 tax returns filed with an adjusted gross income of $1 million or more in 2010. The millionaire tax returns represent 0.1% of all 2010 returns, the report said.
A decade before, there were 1,440 millionaire tax returns filed, which represented 0.08% of all 2000 tax returns.
California had the most million-dollar tax filers in the country, with 42,090 in 2010, but the numbers are decreasing. There were 45,371 in 2000, according to Bloomberg.
New York, with 35,802 millionaire tax returns, was No. 2, followed by Texas, with 23,859, and Florida, with 19,450. Illinois rounded out the top five with 14,110 tax returns filed with adjusted gross incomes of $1 million or more in 2010.
Vermont was ranked last on the list with 295 millionaire tax returns, 12 fewer than it had in 2000.
