A workplace summit designed to help employers measure the impact domestic violence on workers and productivity will be held in North Charleston next week.
My Sister’s House and Verizon Wireless are hosting the first Domestic Violence at the Workplace Summit from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at North Charleston City Hall. There is no charge to attend, and you can register online.
The summit can help employers understand how domestic violence can negatively impact a bottom line, Verizon said in a news release.
“We calculate average lost days at work, increased health care and mental health care expenses, costs of mistakes and lost productivity and add it all up in a manner that takes employers' breath away,” the release said.
The summit also will offer protocols for addressing domestic violence issues.
Verizon said some experts think the cost to businesses is as much as $5 billion a year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found about 8 million lost, paid workdays each year could be attributed to intimate partner violence in a 2003 study.
