The Southern Living Taste of Charleston, organized by the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association, kicks off Friday with Sweet & Southern from 6-10 p.m. at the Cottage on the Creek on Shem Creek. This event will include music from singer-songwriter Gigi Dover & Big Love, Lowcountry cuisine from Food for the Southern Soul and Charleston Bay Gourmet, and moonlit harbor cruises by Butler Marine.
A Dine Around will take place on Friday and Saturday nights at participating restaurants. All restaurants will create a three-course meal paired with a specialty beer or craft beer.
Events continue Saturday with the sold-out Iron Chef Competition, in which local chefs face off in a head-to-head battle at the Culinary Institute of Charleston’s amphitheater kitchen. This year’s event will be men versus women, pitting Drew Hedlund of Fleet Landing and Brandon Buck of Middleton Place against Jael Allen of Mosaic Cafe and Eva Broyles of Eli’s Table.
The Main Event is 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant, with samplings of local cuisine from more than 50 Charleston restaurants, as well as live music by The Piedmont Boys, a waiter race, children’s area, craft beer garden and Southern Living exhibition area. A portion of the proceeds from the main event will benefit five local charities: The Ronald McDonald House, Hollings Cancer Center, Hospitality Heroes, Shriners Hospitals for Children and Charleston County Schools Science Materials Resource Center.
