Holly Herrick will be signing copies of her books, including her latest, The French Cook: Sauces, during brunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at The Fat Hen. In her new book, Herrick uses how-to photography and step-by-step techniques to teach about French sauces. The book focuses on the five mother sauces of French cuisine: bechamel, veloutes, hollandaise, espagnol and brown sauces, and tomato sauces.
Herrick is a graduate of Boston College and recipient of Le Grande Diplome in Cuisine and Pastry from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. She has written five cookbooks.
Republic Garden & Lounge will begin offering Sunday brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The menu offers brunch items with a light, healthy approach and also features regular menu items. Menu highlights include the Republic honey biscuit with fleur de sel butter; breakfast charcuterie and cheese with a rotation of homemade breakfast meats including duck prosciutto and pork belly rillettes and artisan cheeses; hash with marinated pork secreto; and melon salad with duck prosciutto. The bar menu also will be available.
Big Billy’s Burger Joint at 5070 International Blvd. in North Charleston is holding a Build a Burger contest. First prize is $250 and the addition of the winning burger to the Big Billy’s Burger Joint specials menu. One weekly winner will be chosen every Friday and posted to the restaurant’s Facebook page. His or her burger will also be featured in the restaurant. The winning burgers will be announced Sept. 14.
