MUSC Children’s Hospital received three top-50 rankings in a U.S. News & World Report study of the country’s best children’s hospitals.

The rankings came in this year’s edition of America’s Best Children’s Hospitals. The Medical University of South Carolina was the only hospital in the state to be ranked.

The Children’s Hospital ranked 39th in gastroenterology and GI surgery; 31st in nephrology; and 21st in cardiology and heart surgery, according to the rankings. For the rankings, U.S. News surveyed 179 pediatric centers to get clinical data in 10 specialties and asked 1,500 specialists where they would send the sickest children.

“The children of South Carolina are extremely fortunate to have the level of quality for these programs available so close to home,” said Dr. Rita Ryan, chairwoman of the Department of Pediatrics for MUSC. “The excellence in these areas also attracts pediatric medical and surgical specialists in other areas as well. It’s what separates us from every other pediatric hospital or program in the state.”
