Benefitfocus will be expanding internationally in the next year, and Canada is the company’s first targeted foreign market, CEO Shawn Jenkins said today.

Jenkins’ remarks came during the keynote address for the company’s yearly One Place meeting. The Daniel Island-based tech firm builds online platforms used by companies and insurance carriers to manage benefits.

By next year’s One Place, Jenkins said, the company hopes to be showing video of associates in Canada as it unrolls a platform built for that market. In other markets, Jenkins said, Benefitfocus will look at forming relationships with companies that are similar and will listen to the needs of its U.S.-based customers, some of which have locations across the world.

“We are forming some on-purpose partnerships,” Jenkins said. “We think this is a good way to extend the platform and learn as we go.”

During the event, the company also unveiled the 2014 edition of its HR InTouch marketplace, which allows users to manage and select benefits online, and iPhone and Android apps for HR InTouch.

Jenkins also highlighted BenefitFocus’ accomplishments during 2012, which included opening a San Francisco office and a Design and Engineering Building on its Daniel Island campus.

The company has also seen growth year-over-year. In 2006, the company had 2.5 million consumers using its platforms, and as of last year, Benefitfocus had 20 million consumers signed up.

Jenkins also ran through a list of new companies that are using his company’s platform, and they include Fender, Continental Tire, Dannon, the city of Portland and UnderArmour.

“In some cases it’s sort of mind boggling the growth that we’ve experienced,” Jenkins said. “We really feel like together we’re just getting started.”
