Charleston Culinary Tours' Charleston Chefs Showdown will be 6:30-9:30 p.m. May 9 at the Maritime Center. South of Calhoun chefs Ross Webb of Leaf Cafe and Steven Ollard of Amen Street will compete against north of Calhoun chefs Trey Stabler of Five Loaves Cafe and Shay MacDonald of Hom.
Attendees will be able to watch the live competition. There will also be food provided by sponsoring restaurants, including Southend Brewery and Smokehouse, Leaf, Amen Street, Sweet CeCe's, Kaminsky's, Stars, Hom, Sugar Bakeshop, Lowcountry Bistro, Five Loaves Cafe and The MacIntosh. Live music will be performed by The Bushels. Tickets are $100 per person and proceeds benefit Chefs Feed the Need. Ted's Butcherblock food truck will be participating in Daniel Island’s farmers market on Thursdays, now through Oct. 3. A selection of the shop's meat items will be precut, vacuum packaged and available for purchase during the market. The downtown Charleston shop — located at 334 E. Bay St. — offers all-natural meats and poultry, including Painted Hills Natural Beef, Eden Farms Kurobuta pork, Bell & Evans chicken and artisanal bacons, among other items.

Daniel Island’s farmers market is located along Seven Farms Drive. It is open 4-7 p.m. each Thursday until Oct. 3, rain or shine.
Mex 1 Coastal Cantina in West Ashley will celebrate its first Cinco de Mayo with a party from noon to 10 p.m. May 5. In the parking lot, there will be live music from the The Dubplates & Malandro Soul, specialty tacos, prizes, a surfboard raffle, craft beers and fresh-squeezed margaritas. The student-run restaurant at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Charleston, 24 N. Market St., is open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Thursday and Friday. A three-course meal is $12, including tax and beverage. The menu includes oolong marinated striped bass with braised bok choy in a citrus-soy demi glace as an entree; soba noodle salad in rice vinegar with cilantro, julienned vegetables and peanuts as an appetizer; and green tea mousse cake for dessert.
