The 10th annual Parents Leading the Way Conference is 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 23 at Stall High School in North Charleston. Parents Anonymous of South Carolina is partnering with Children’s Trust of South Carolina, South Carolina Parent-Teacher Association, Charleston County School District’s Department of Federal Programs and South Carolina School Improvement Council to recognize and encourage parent leadership in the home, school and community.
Registration is $75 and includes a program for children 3 and up as well as a light breakfast and lunch. Parents who have children attending Title I schools who would like to attend, but may not be able to afford the registration fee, should contact the parent liaison/advocate at their child’s school. This holiday season Avocet Properties, a vacation rental company on Folly Beach, along with Operation R&R was able to help more than a dozen military families reconnect with their loved ones. Operation R&R is a nonprofit providing servicemen and women with an opportunity to get away and strengthen their relationships with their spouses and children by vacationing in the Charleston area. Avocet Properties has teamed up with its homeowners to donate three- to seven-night vacation stays in the Lowcountry.
Friends of MUSC Children’s Hospital is hosting a Blue Oyster Bash from 7-10 p.m. Feb. 2 at Charles Towne Landing’s Founders Hall. This Lowcountry oyster roast and barbecue will feature live music by The Blue Dogs, artisan demonstrations and a silent auction. Tickets are $50 per person in advance and $60 after Jan. 25. Friends of MUSC Children’s Hospital is dedicated to raising funds for and enhancing community awareness of the care delivered at the MUSC Children’s Hospital.
Band Needtobreathe, which recorded its fourth album The Reckoning in Charleston, is partnering with Commonwealth Cares Foundation to host the Needtobreathe Classic, a golf tournament benefiting Palmetto Medical Initiative. The tournament is set for March 19 on the Ralston Creek and Beresford courses at the Daniel Island Club.
This is the fifth year the Commonwealth Cares Foundation has hosted a charity golf tournament and the third year it will donate the proceeds to Palmetto Medical Initiative, a Charleston-based nonprofit committed to providing health care to those in need while increasing accessibility to global medical missions.
Needtobreathe has been long-time supporters of Palmetto Medical Initiative and has played in the annual golf tournament. Musicians John Mark McMillan, Collective Soul and MercyMe also will participate in the golf tournament. The musicians will play at an after-party open only to sponsors, select guests and the first 30 foursomes to register for the golf tournament. Celebrity foursome packages are available for $5,000.
Cost for the Needtobreathe Classic is $300 for individual player registration and $1,200 for a team of four. Register online or call 843-884-4545.
The eighth annual Leukemia Ball will be 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Omar Shrine ballroom in Mount Pleasant. It will feature silent and live auctions, food and cocktails, music and dancing with the 7 Once Band. Tickets are $125. Learn more at lls.org/scleukemiaball.
Water Missions International’s 2013 Walk for Water will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 23. Now in its seventh year, the Walk for Water encourages participants to carry buckets along a 3-mile route to simulate the daily trek millions of women and children in developing countries make to collect water.
In 2012, more than 2,600 people from throughout the country participated in the event, raising more than $150,000 for safe water projects worldwide. This year, Water Missions International has set a goal to raise $250,000.
