Six companies submit proposals to develop Charleston’s Horizon Project

Six companies submitted proposals to the city of Charleston to develop a 20-acre plot of land known as the Horizon Project.

The tract is currently open space and surface parking located adjacent to the Medical University of South Carolina’s campus.

The city hopes the project will be a mixed-use development featuring apartments, office space and research space to grow the city’s knowledge-based economy.

Most proposals came from regionally based developers, although one Ohio developer submitted a proposal. Specifics about the proposals were not given.

The city announced its request for proposals in September on top of the Lockwood Marriott hotel, which overlooks the Horizon site. The city is hoping for a complete makeover of the site and $1 billion in investment over the next couple decades.
