The city of Walterboro will showcase its wares and start the holiday season off with a Holiday Open House Nov. 16-17, followed by a Christmas tree lighting ceremony and parade during the first weekend in December.
The Holiday Open House will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in historic downtown Walterboro and also at the South Carolina Artisans Center. This is a free event featuring artisan demonstrations and a holiday craft show. Retailers, including specialty shops, local restaurants, antique stores and the Christmas Shop will be doing demonstrations and offering special holiday sales. The event will be in downtown Walterboro at 249 E. Washington St. and at the South Carolina Artisans Center at 318 Wichman St. For more information, call 843-549-0011.
In addition, the second annual Lowcountry International Food & Arts Festival will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 8 in the city parking lot at East Washington and Lucas streets. This is a free event hosted by the Colleton County Arts Council and the Lowcountry International Society. The festival will feature a variety of international-themed food and art. Wonder Works will host its second annual holiday festival, Elfstravaganza, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at its Mount Pleasant store, 624 D Long Point Road, in the Belle Hall Shopping Center.
Elfstravaganza kicks off the holiday season with the top toys of 2012, holiday-themed activities, and holiday treats and refreshments. The event is part of Neighborhood Toy Store Day, when toy stores across the country celebrate the holidays while giving back to area communities. Donations at this year’s Elfstravaganza will benefit Hugs for Harper, Keys for Hope, Blessings for Becky and Samaritan’s Purse.
Every child in attendance will receive a free toy. Carol Aebersold, author of The Elf on the Shelf — A Christmas Tradition, will do a book signing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Complimentary pictures with the book’s main character, Elfie, will be available all day. Children may participate in several holiday activities, such as ornament decorating, writing letters to Santa and decorating cookies.
