Charleston-based Water Missions International has launched the second annual Water Sunday initiative, a program that urges churches throughout the country to dedicate one Sunday toward educating their congregations about the global need for safe water.
More than 30 churches participated in 2011, raising more than $100,000 for safe water projects. This year, Water Missions International has a goal of recruiting 100 churches to participate. If those 100 churches each raised $5,000, it would mean 33,000 people would be given access to safe water. For more information, visit www.watermissions.org/watersunday.
Water Missions International also has initiated an emergency response to help Caribbean areas hit by Hurricane Sandy. The organization sent a team of seven technicians to help the 15,000 residents in the town of Baraderes, west of Port-au-Prince, which is suffering from a lack of safe water following the hurricane. It will install three water treatment systems.
