Official artwork for the 2013 BB&T Charleston Wine & Food Festival depicts a goose swimming in a wine glass.

The poster was unveiled Wednesday and was commissioned by the festival. Local artist Robert Lange created the image.

“It was pretty difficult for me to get the goose to stay still inside the glass long enough for me to paint him,” Lange said, jokingly. “I wanted the piece to embody the feeling of Charleston’s culinary scene. This city oozes charm and has a world-class culinary scene, yet it doesn’t take itself too seriously.”

Lange often shrinks down people or animals in his paintings and depicts them in unexpected situations.

“In creating this painting, I knew I wanted to combine wine and food in a not-so-obvious way,” he said. “The piece, to be representational of food and wine, needed to have levity of spirit while celebrating the charm and richness of Charleston.”

The artwork will appear on the official poster for the event, in the ticket brochure, website and marketing materials. Posters and other merchandise with the artwork will be available for purchase online or during the festival at the retail tent in Marion Square.

The festival will take place Feb. 28 through March 3, 2013.
