The Mellow Mushroom in Mount Pleasant is hosting the third annual Mount Pleasant Beerfest from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at its location on Highway 17 North. More than 25 local and national craft breweries will be serving up craft beers for unlimited tasting along with pizza and music from Schema and The System.
Proceeds will benefit the Carolina Youth Development Center in Charleston, which provides support to children that are victims of abuse and neglect. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 the day of the event or $45 for a VIP ticket.
Pleasant Family Dentistry is hosting Day of Smiles, a free day of dentistry for 100 uninsured or underinsured locals starting at 7 a.m. Saturday. The event is first come, first serve for one free service, including cleaning, extraction or filling. Pleasant Family Dentistry is located at 1204 Two Island Court in Mount Pleasant.
Goodwill’s Nevermore Masquerade is Monday at the historic Dock Street Theatre in downtown Charleston. Proceeds will benefit South Carolina Special Olympics and Goodwill’s Operation Independence Program.
The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. and will feature Charleston Stage’s Nevermore, the tale of the life of Edgar Allan Poe. Before the play, there will be heavy hors d’oeuvres and specialty drinks, a Goodwill trunk show and silent auction. A prize will be awarded for the evening’s best dressed “Edgar Allan Poe.” Costumes are optional. Tickets are $75 per person in advance and can be purchased at www.palmettogoodwill.org or for $85 at the door.
Water Missions International was recently honored during Uganda's 50th jubilee celebration for providing access to safe water and sanitation solutions for the people of Uganda.
Water Missions International was one of two nongovernmental organizations recognized during the ceremony for work within the district of Mukono. Water Missions International-Uganda has completed 60 safe water projects in-country, which provides safe water access to more than 150,000 people. See photos of the ceremony.
College of Charleston students working at Dixie Plantation, 800 acres of land along the Stono River in Hollywood, are hosting a supply drive during the month of October. Students are collecting supplies for the property’s garden, which is used to demonstrate sustainable gardening techniques to the community. Needed items include large gardening tools, garden hand tools, a weed eater, gloves, hoses, chicken wire, seed-starting supplies, planters and tires of all sizes. Representatives of CresCom Bank donated $2,000 to Charleston’s Teachers’ Supply Closet to help repair damages caused by heavy rains in August. Teachers’ Supply Closet’s ceiling collapsed and about 3 inches of rain ended up in the building. Most of the school supplies were saved, however, severe structure damage was caused to the building’s roof. CresCom CEO David Morrow presented the check to Deborah Halon, COO, and Yvonne Orr, chairman of the board. Teachers' Supply Closet is a nonprofit organization that provides free school supplies to teachers in the tri-county area.
Charleston Community Sailing is hosting its sixth annual Oyster Roast from 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 18 at the James Island Yacht Club. There will be oysters, barbecue, beer and wine, live bluegrass music and raffle prizes. The money raised will go toward renewing its 9-year-old fleet of boats. Tickets are $30 for adults, $15 for youth, and free for 12 and under.
The American Cancer Society is seeking people in the Charleston area to help spread the word about the Cancer Prevention Study-3, a historic nationwide study to help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer. Volunteers will help educate and recruit community members to enroll in the study in January.

The Awendaw District Fire Department will have a fire prevention display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the See Wee Visitor Center on Highway 17 North in Awendaw. There will be fire prevention materials and games, as well as food and drinks. The event is open to the public.
MUSC Physicians is hosting MUSC Health and Wellness Community Day on Nov. 3 at the new building in Mount Pleasant, MUSC Health East Cooper at 1600 Midtown Ave. There will be cholesterol and glucose screenings, bone density screenings, flu shots for the first 100 people 9 and older, cooking demonstrations, Pure Barre classes and other family-friendly activities. Trident United Way Young Philanthropists Society is hosting Blues & Brews from 5:30 to 8 tonight at Palmetto Brewery in downtown Charleston. This event is free for Charleston's young professionals who want to learn more about the society. There will be live music by the Charles David Band, complimentary beer and barbecue, and networking opportunities. Pikler USA has selected Charleston for its annual intensive training for early childhood specialists. Fifty leading national and international infant and toddler teacher trainers, mental health practitioners, researchers and published authors will gather today at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina for a chance to meet with Anna Tardos, former director of The Pikler Institute. Tardos has more than 50 years of infant and toddler study and experience. The event is 7 to 8:30 p.m. The event is free but seating is limited.

The Coastal Cupboard’s charity knife sharpening event is Nov. 2-4 at its Belle Hall Shopping Center. Guests can get their knives professionally sharpened for just a $1 donation per knife. All proceeds benefit the Charleston Basket Brigade, a nonprofit that aims to feed 20,000 tri-county residents at Thanksgiving. There will also be free gourmet food tastings, free knife skills lessons and a charity raffle.
The Children's Museum of the Lowcountry is hosting its annual Fall Fun House from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The event offers carnival games, prizes, arts and crafts, face painting, a jump castle and treats. Children and parents are encouraged to dress in costumes. Cost is $3 per person for members and $7 per person for non-members; children 12 months and under are free. Tickets are available online at www.explorecml.org. Space is limited.
Maritime Association of South Carolina is updating the honor roll list for this year's Maritime Memorial Day at noon Nov. 1 on board the USS Yorktown. At the event, the association and the Charleston Port & Seafarers' Society will honor friends, family and colleagues from the waterfront community who have passed away during the year.
