A pet costume contest to benefit Pet Helpers will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 27 at Mount Pleasant Towne Centre outside Palmetto Grande Cinema. Registration begins at noon. Cost is $10 per category and all proceeds benefit Pet Helpers. Participants can register at Hairy Winston Pet Boutique. Pets can compete in five costume categories: best super hero; best homemade or most original; best duo; most fabulous or cutest; and best monster or scariest.
Winners and runners-up from each category will win prizes. All prizes are donated by Hairy Winston Pet Boutique and other participating shops at Mount Pleasant Towne Centre.
Nonprofit Respite Care Charleston will host the second annual Moments on Canvas Art Show and Sale from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Cooper River Room at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Memorial Park. Tickets cost $40 per person; includes beverages, food from area restaurants and live music by the V-Tones of Charleston. Purchase tickets in advance.
The evening will feature a special artwork sale by the participants of Respite Care Charleston as well as a memorial tribute to Charleston artist Jim Amella. Amella was an advocate for people with Alzheimer’s disease, member of the Charleston Artist Guild and volunteer of Respite Care Charleston.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2012 Light The Night Walk will be 5:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. Each year, teams come together from across the U.S. and Canada to raise funds for people battling blood cancers.

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley recently signed a proclamation declaring September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with representatives from Chase After a Cure.
Chase After a Cure supports families of childhood cancer patients, raises awareness about childhood cancer and funds childhood cancer research at the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital. For more information, visit www.chaseafteracure.com.

The Golden Nugget Paddle 'n Party will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Lighthouse on Shem Creek. The event benefits the Mount Pleasant Land Conservancy. The Half Moon Outfitters "Golden Nugget" 10K and 5K Stand Up Paddleboard Races will be a highlight of the event. The event will also feature appetizers from local restaurants, Palmetto Brewing beers, live music featuring Minimum Wage, a silent auction and harbor cruises aboard the Palmetto Breeze catamaran. A Global Affair Gala & Silent Auction benefiting Kick It Forward is from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Beatty Center at the College of Charleston. Possibilities without Borders, a local nonprofit organization supporting international causes, and students at the College of Charleston School of Business are using the popularity of soccer to bring educational and advancement opportunities to Cameroon, Africa. Tickets to the black-tie event are $55 each.
The Kick It Forward project will send students to Bafousam, Cameroon, this spring to deliver 3,000 school care packages and 200 soccer balls to be used in schools, villages and community centers to reward kids for attending school. Additionally, the students will be involved in creating village education programs about the benefits of water sanitation while also providing microloans to women seeking to become entrepreneurs.
The public is invited to join MUSC Physicians at its new building in Mount Pleasant for a Health & Wellness Community Day. There will be cholesterol and glucose screenings, bone density screenings and flu shots for the first 100 people, age 9 and older. The Center for Women will host its 11th annual networking event from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 12 at The Citadel Holliday Alumni Center. Special guests include Dorothy Perrin Moore, author of Womenpreneurs — 21st Century Success Stories. Moore will lead a discussion on how to be a successful entrepreneur followed by a panel with local entrepreneurs who are featured in her book, including Anita Zucker, CEO of Intertech; Nikki Hardin founder of Skirt magazine; and Judith Moore, CEO of the Charleston Cookie Co.

The fourth annual Joint Base Charleston Run the Runway 5K honoring Brig. Gen. Thomas Mikolajcik begins at 7:45 a.m. Oct. 27. The race is open to military and civilians. The S.C. Nurses Foundation, the nonprofit that presents the annual Palmetto Gold nursing awards, is hosting its fourth annual Nurses Care Walk at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 3 at Palmetto Islands County Park in Mount Pleasant. Join members of the Charleston County Fire Chiefs Association Friday at Oak Point Golf Course at Kiawah Island Resort for the fourth annual National Fallen Firefighters Foundation golf tournament. Cost is $85 per golfer and includes golf, cart, contests, prizes, cookout and refreshments. The Children's Museum of the Lowcountry is hosting its ninth annual gala, called Sensational Circus Spectacular.
