The International Economic Development Council awarded SCRA with the Gold Excellence in Economic Development Award on Oct. 2.
The statewide research corporation received the award in the real estate redevelopment and reuse for communities category, with populations greater than 500,000.
The council honored organizations and individuals for efforts in creating positive change in communities at its annual conference this month.
“We recognize SCRA for creating innovative and successful strategies to promote economic development in this period of global recovery,” said Jay Moon, the council’s chairman.
“SCRA demonstrates that they are at the forefront of the economic development profession and are using cutting-edge, effective practices that can be replicated in other communities,” Moon added.
SCRA was honored for its innovation centers, which help businesses create and develop products. The SCRA MUSC Innovation Center supports high-tech bioscience research, the USC Innovation Center caters to companies moving to the light manufacturing stage and the Duke Energy Innovation Center focuses on advanced materials research.
“SCRA Innovation Centers were designed with local communities and our university partners for the greater economic benefit they bring throughout South Carolina,” SCRA CEO Bill Mahoney said. “We are delighted to once again receive an IEDC award, the third in four years, and we look forward to the continued contributions that these dynamic technology centers will bring to our knowledge economy.”
