Dust off your masks for Goodwill’s Nevermore Masquerade with food, beverages and entertainment, including a Goodwill trunk show and silent auction. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Dock Street Theatre, 135 Church St. in Charleston. Tickets are $75 per person in advance and $85 at the door. Respite Care Charleston, a local organization that helps families who face the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, is launching a social day respite program at North Charleston United Methodist Church in Park Circle Oct. 25.

Activities include memory stimulating socialization, music therapy and gentle exercise. Caregivers will be able to focus on personal needs and attend support groups. The new program will meet every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. at North Charleston United Methodist Church’s Davis Fellowship Hall, 1125 E. Additional upcoming events include volunteer information and training at 11:30 a.m. Thursday and an open house at 10 a.m. Oct. 18 for care partners, individuals with a diagnosis of dementia, community members, local business owners and potential volunteers.


Chucktown After 5 this week is benefiting Nick Collins, a guitarist and vocalist who was seriously injured in a car accident Aug. 3. Live entertainment at the show will include Collins' band, Fowler's Mustache, as well as Stop Light Observation. There will also be a silent auction to help raise money for the family. Pot Kettle Black food truck will be on site. The event is 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Fountain Walk Plaza, 360 Concord St. in downtown Charleston. Tickets are $5 for two people with the City Paper coupon and are available at the gate.


The 2012 American Red Cross Tour of Duty is 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 12 at the North Charleston Convention Center. This hands-on experience showcases what the American Red Cross does and how it works with the community when disaster strikes.

Charleston County firefighters will suit up and compete in full gear. The event is free; to register or for more information, visit www.lowcountryredcross.org.

Pinewood Preparatory School is hosting the 14th annual Pinewood Preparatory School Golf Classic Oct. 12 at Legend Oaks Golf Course in Summerville. Proceeds will fund the school’s new technology initiatives.

The event will begin at 7 a.m. with breakfast, followed by a shot gun start at 8:30 a.m. Teams will enjoy 18 holes of golf, a cart, a goody bag, a luncheon hosted by Epicure Catering and prizes, including golf and sporting event packages and gift certificates.

Richard Mandell, a nationally recognized golf course architect, author and radio personality, will be at the event. Mandell has been part of the design of more than 40 golf courses around the United States. He also will sign copies of his book, Pinehurst: Home of American Golf.

Knology of Charleston will sponsor the Down Syndrome Association of the Lowcountry 2012 Buddy Walk Sunday at Daniel Island’s Etiwan Park. The event will help raise awareness and funds for programs that benefit people with Down syndrome and their families.

Sunday’s event begins at 12:30 p.m. with face painting and food. The one-mile walk begins at 3 p.m. followed by a hot-dog eating contest and games.


Omar Shriners is hosting its Homecoming Ceremonial Oct. 17-20 to raise money for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Events include a charity gala at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Omar Shrine Temple in Mount Pleasant. Sports celebrity guests with local ties will attend the gala and be part of the following day’s golf tournament. Celebrities include Danny Ford, former NCAA Championship Clemson football coach; Keith Jennings, former NFL player; Harold Richardson, former NFL general manager; Jim Stuckey, two-time Super Bowl champion; Kevin Long, former NFL player; Matt Weiders, current MLB player; Justin Smoak, current MLB player; and Harold Green, former NFL player.

Tickets to the gala are $100 per couple and available for purchase at www.OmarShriners.org or at Harbor Breeze Restaurant on Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant.

The Celebrity Golf Classic is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 18 at Miler Country Club and Pine Forest Country Club in Summerville. Cost is $400 for a foursome or $100 per person.


Whole Foods Market Yoga Marathon benefiting Louie's Kids is noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in Marion Square and 25% of participant and spectator purchases will be donated back to Louie's Kids.


The community gathered Sept. 27 for the official opening of the newly renovated gym floor at R.D. Schroder Middle School, part of Hollywood’s Schroder Blaney Recreational Complex. Managed jointly by Charleston County School District and the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission as part of the Charleston County Community Education Program, the recreational complex features a multipurpose field for soccer, baseball and football, two outdoor practice basketball courts, playground equipment, an amphitheater and walking trails.

The new floor was partially funded by a park and recreation development grant.


The Pantry Inc. has teamed up with BP’s Fueling Communities program to donate $10,000 to the Charleston County School District for a second year. The donation will provide $1,000 to 10 schools in the district. Each school will accept its donation at a BP Olympic Experience event hosted by Kangaroo Express at 10 a.m. Saturday at Burns Elementary School. The event will feature Olympic-themed games and activities, student performances, entertainment, food from Subway and a special appearance by Olympian and South Carolinian Jerome Singleton.

The schools receiving a donation in Charleston County are: Burke High School, Burns Elementary School, Drayton Hall Elementary School, Ellington Elementary School, Mount Zion Elementary School, North Charleston Elementary School, Stono Park Elementary School, Sullivan’s Island Elementary School, Wando High School and West Ashley High School.


The Rethink Series, a new monthly conversation series hosted by the Sustainability Institute, is 6:30 to 7:30 tonight at Coast Brewing Co., 1250 N. 2nd St. in North Charleston. It is free for members, $15 for non-members. The Sustainability Institute is a nonprofit with a mission of empowering South Carolina communities to transform homes and workplaces to conserve energy and reduce the overall environmental impact.


Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina is hosting Smoke on the Harbor BBQ Throwdown, a Southern Barbecue Network event benefiting the Lowcountry Food Bank. The barbecue competition is set for Nov. 16-18 at the Lookout Pavilion. Smoke on the Harbor is open to professional and amateur barbecue chefs who are looking to compete in three meat categories, including chicken wings, pork butts and ribs, for a total of $6,000 in prize money. The event is open to the public and attendees will have a chance to sample some of the barbecue creations. Cost of entry for teams is $175 by Oct. 16; registration increases to $225 after Oct. 17.

Nonperishable food items will be accepted throughout the weekend. Guests who donate five canned goods will receive $5 off admission.

Leslie Haywood, founder and president of Charmed Life Products and inventor of Grill Charms, will be the ambassador of the barbecue and master of ceremonies. Haywood and her product have appeared on national TV, including The Today Show, Shark Tank and The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch.
