Join the Center for Women at Leaf Cafe & Bar for the next Let's Do Lunch in Charleston event at noon Friday. Leaf Chef Ross Webb will cook up lunch with dessert by Cupcake. Jennet Robinson Alterman, executive director of the Center for Women, will discuss business expertise available to support female entrepreneurs, leadership training and support for ovarian cancer patients. September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and the Center for Women provides education and support services to women diagnosed with ovarian cancer, their caregivers and friends.
The third annual Avondale 5K Run & Walk for Special Kids is at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 13. The event benefits the Charles Webb Center. Tate Mikell, a former Charleston city policeman who suffered a brain aneurysm that left him disabled, will be on hand to kick off the race. Mikell inspired 2011 participants by walking and finishing the race.
Starting on Magnolia Road in front of Triangle Char & Bar, runners and walkers will make their way through the streets of the Avondale neighborhood in West Ashley. Strollers and dogs are welcome. Triangle Char & Bar is hosting the afterparty with music, food and drinks.
The Charles Webb Center is a nonprofit, day care center that serves children from age 6 weeks to 10 years old who have developmental disabilities and special needs. The center is under the umbrella of the Disabilities Board of Charleston County. To raise awareness about the children of the center, runners and walkers are able to sponsor a child, creating teams and soliciting sponsors. The team that raises the most money for a child will get a private party for 25 from Triangle Char & Bar.
Cost is $30 for race registration, which includes a T-shirt and the afterparty; $35 for day-of registration; and $20 for the party only.
The 14th annual James Island Connector Run is Nov. 3. The event benefits the Gavalas Kolanko Foundation, which awards annual scholarships to students with physical disabilities. Since 1999, the foundation has awarded 52 scholarships to Lowcountry students attending the College of Charleston and Charleston Southern University. Both the 10K run and bike ride and the 5K run and walk begin at Cannon Park near the corner of Ashley Avenue and Bennett Street. To register or to volunteer, visit www.jicrun.com.
The 19th annual Tanger Pink Style campaign will take place at the Tanger Outlet Center in North Charleston. Through Oct. 25, shoppers can purchase pink cards for a $1 donation each. The card provides Tanger customers with a 25% discount on a single item at participating stores located at Tanger Outlets. Proceeds from card sales will be donated to Hollings Cancer Center and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Cards can be purchased at the Tanger Shopper Services Center or online at www.tangeroutlet.com.
The event kicks off with a Pink Partini from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at Tanger Outlets. There will be food, drinks, music, door prizes and savings on fall fashion.
The Sustainability Institute, a local nonprofit with a mission of empowering South Carolinians to conserve energy and reduce environmental impact, is hosting a party to celebrate the work of its energy-efficient programs, workforce development, direct services, and education and awareness.
The SuperHero Soiree begins 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at Hibernian Hall. DJ United will be spinning music with intertwined superhero themes. There will also be food and cocktails from local businesses. Attendees are invited to dress as a favorite superhero. Tickets are $50; event is for ages 21 and over only.
The Mount Pleasant Mom to Mom Sale is Oct. 6 at the National Guard Armory in Mount Pleasant. Doors open at 7 a.m. for this consignment sale featuring toys, books, fall and winter clothing, baby equipment, bedding and furniture from more than 100 different consignors and vendors. Admission is $1, which goes toward HALOS, an organization that provides resources and opportunities to abused and neglected children and their caregivers.

Trident Literacy celebrated International Literacy Day and National Family Literacy Week Sept. 10-16 with a variety of events. Trident Literacy helps adults without high school credentials increase their skills, earn WorkKeys Career Readiness Certificates and learn how to use a computer.
Music Man’s BBQ in Moncks Corner and Trident Health are hosting its second annual fundraising dinner for the American Heart Association Tuesday. Proceeds benefit the Trident Health AHA Heart Walk team. Tickets are $25 and include a rib-eye steak, side dishes, dessert, beer and wine; there will also be live music.

As part of the 2012 Palmetto Palace Hospitality Day in Action, volunteers and event sponsors will pack 350 boxed lunches provided by California Dreaming, Frito-Lay and Pepsi Co., Limehouse Produce, Triangle Rent-A-Car and The Charleston Marriott, for families of critically ill in-patients receiving care at local hospitals. The event is 10 a.m. Oct. 4 at the Charleston Marriott, 170 Lockwood Blvd. Lunches will be delivered to health care facilities throughout the day.
The S.C. Nurses Foundation will host the fourth annual Nurses Care Walk at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 3 at Palmetto Islands County Park in Mount Pleasant. Participants who fundraise at least $25 and register by Oct. 21 receive a free T-shirt. Online registration forms and donation information is available at www.scnursesfoundation.com. The nurses foundation is a nonprofit devoted to promoting the nursing profession through scholarships, grants and awards.
The Feline Freedom Coalition is hosting To the Nines Sunday from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 7 aboard the Carolina Queen paddleboat. Guests will enjoy cocktails and food catered by Dish and Design while cruising the Charleston Harbor. Music will be provided by the Joe Clarke jazz quartet and dancers from Fred Astaire will perform. There will be a live and silent auction with proceeds benefiting programs of the Feline Freedom Coalition, a nonprofit dedicated to providing proactive solutions for feral cats living throughout the Charleston metro area.
The Pantry Inc. announced its summer-long Kangaroo Express Salute Our Troops fundraising campaign raised $3.17 million, surpassing the total number of funds raised during the inaugural 2011 campaign. From Independence Day through Labor Day, Kangaroo Express invited store guests to make donations to the campaign. The Pantry has more than 1,500 Kangaroo Express stores across 13 states. Donations from the campaign will directly support the USO, Wounded Warrior Project and six state-based military support organizations.
The S.C. Women’s Business Center is hosting its monthly networking forum from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at 129 Cannon St., Charleston. Cost is $10 and space is limited. The event offers a chance for new and existing business owners to meet other women in business, share success stories, learn about what others have done to make their business thrive and connect with other resources.
REV’s Neighbor to Neighbor campaign is a year-long initiative to partner with local nonprofits that positively influence the overall health and wellness of children in the Charleston community. REV selected five local nonprofits as beneficiaries and each nonprofit has a designated week when 5% of food proceeds from Monza, Closed for Business, Poe's Tavern and Taco Boy locations will go directly to that organization.
From today through Sept. 26, the funds raised during the Neighbor to Neighbor campaign will be donated to the Wings organization. Wings is an after-school program for children that develops relationship skills, self-management, responsible decision making, as well as self and social awareness.
The St. James Foundation, an ecumenical, community outreach nonprofit affiliated with St. James Presbyterian Church on James Island, announced two community outreach projects as part of its fall 2012 Lifelong Learning Series.
From 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, the St. James Foundation, in collaboration with the S.C. Coalition for Voter Participation, will host a community breakfast in the St. James Presbyterian Church fellowship hall. This will be an opportunity to share concerns and/or appreciation with elected legislators and representatives from the local school board and sheriff's department.
At 6 p.m. Oct. 19, the foundation will host Deona Smith, CEO and editor of Living Roots magazine, for a discussion titled Living Roots Magazine: From Design to Publication. The magazine celebrates the culture, history and lifestyle of the African-American community.

The Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired is hosting an oyster roast and auction from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 5 at Alhambra Hall, 131 Middle St. in Mount Pleasant. There will be beer, wine, appetizers, oysters and desserts, plus music by The Killer Whales. Mike Veeck of the RiverDogs will speak and Dave Williams of WCIV-TV will host the live auction. Tickets are $35 per person; $60 per couple in advance; at the door, tickets are $40 per person and $70 per couple.
