On Sept. 19, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control will hear public comments for permits needed for a planned cruise terminal on Union Pier.

If you go

What: Public hearing for planned cruise terminal on Union Pier
When: Sept. 19, 6 p.m.
Where: Sterett Hall Auditorium, 1530 7th St., North Charleston

The hearing will focus on an application submitted by the S.C. State Ports Authority to modify Building 322 on Union Pier and to build two covered staging areas that will handle passengers, luggage and ship supplies.

DHEC already held a hearing for the installation of five pilings that will support three elevators and two escalators. On April 19, opponents and supporters of the new cruise facility sparred over the ports authority’s plans to renovate a warehouse on Union Pier and move the cruise terminal farther north on its property.

The DHEC Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management will take oral statements from anyone interested in speaking about the project to renovate Building 322 and build the two covered staging areas. The office is also asking residents to send written comments to its office.
