The 10th annual First Day Festival is 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Liberty Square at the South Carolina Aquarium and the Charleston Maritime Center. This free event has education exhibits, healthy snacks, school supplies, face painting, kids’ zone, boat rides, and health and wellness exhibits. Attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the Lowcountry Food Bank.

Circa 1886, 149 Wentworth St. in Charleston, is hosting the third annual Louie’s Kids Benefit Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The event has raised nearly $35,000 to date for Louie’s Kids, a local nonprofit that aims to end childhood obesity. This year’s dinner theme is “Master & Apprentice,” and joining Circa 1886 Chef Marc Collins in the kitchen will be Santiago “Jimmy” de la Cruz, executive chef of The Club at Cimarron in Mission, Texas. The chefs will present a five-course, prix-fixe dinner with paired wines. There will also be a live auction with items from Croghan’s Jewelry Box, a paddleboard and an apprentice cooking class at Circa 1886.

The Mount Pleasant Mom to Mom Sale is Oct. 6 at the National Guard Armory in Mount Pleasant. The consignment sale includes toys, books, fall and winter clothing, baby equipment, bedding and furniture. The $1 admission goes directly to charity and the event is run by volunteers. Doors open at 7 a.m. and close at 11 a.m.; the sale reopens from noon to 1:30 p.m. for the half-off sale. Profits will benefit HALOS, which provides resources and opportunities to abused and neglected children and their caregivers through partnerships with faith-based and other community organizations. 

The Mom to Mom Sale is hosted by the three Mount Pleasant MOMS clubs, or Moms Offering Moms Support, a network of stay-at-home moms who come together to support one another through motherhood.

The American Cancer Society is hosting its first Charleston cupcake competition Aug. 19. “Cupcakes vs. Cancer” welcomes all professional, amateur and youth bakers of Charleston to cook-off to fight cancer. The event is 2-5 p.m. at The Courtyard Marriott, 125 Calhoun St. in downtown Charleston. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. Pastry chefs from the city's top bakeries and restaurants compete for gold alongside amateurs and youth competitors in their own divisions. Judges include food writers, cookbook authors and local magazine editors. There will be entertainment by Mad Crow, and kids can create their own edible masterpieces at the children's table. The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary hosts the Oktoberfest 5K Run-Walk at 6 p.m. Oct. 11 at Waterfront Memorial Park in Mount Pleasant. The race, which will benefit East Cooper Community Outreach, is an open, certified 5K course through the Patriots Point area. The race is capped at 500 participants so early registration is encouraged. The cost is $30 per person through Oct. 1 and $35 from Oct. 2-10; price includes T-shirt, food, drinks and an Oktoberfest party. The post-race party features beer from Westbrook Brewing, food, prizes and music by the German Connection Band. Party tickets are $15 each. The Lowcountry Highrollers and Charleston Krav Maga will host a fundraiser for People Against Rape at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at D.D. Peckers’ Wing Shack, 1660 Savannah Highway, Charleston. People Against Rape assists children and adult victims of sexual violence and abuse in the Lowcountry. There will be live music, raffle prizes, food and drink specials. Admission is a $5 donation, which includes a raffle ticket.

Sweetwater Brewing Co. and more than 20 bars and restaurants in downtown Charleston will celebrate Charleston’s right to clean water by raising awareness and money for The Charleston Waterkeeper. The Charleston Pub Crawl is 1-9 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $25 and a portion of ticket sales will go to The Charleston Waterkeeper. Participants of the crawl will attend a concert at Leaf Cafe & Bar and receive drink and food discounts, including $2 Sweetwater drafts, $3 Red Bull and vodka cocktails at every location, and two drink tickets at the Leaf Cafe Block Party. Participants can join in a guided pub crawl visiting about 10 venues or a scavenger hunt crawl of four-person teams. Start by checking in at Marion's in the French Quarter. Restaurants will be “selling” their clean, Charleston tap water for a $1 donation, with 100% of the proceeds going to The Charleston Waterkeeper.
